Biography
|
Zaps lived in an Arcane clan for the earliest parts of his life. The serious stoic dragon generally preferred things to stay as they are, and did not make it to the Shadow clan emotionally unscathed. With his own home collapsing, he left with the small cadre of his clanmates headed in search of Spinel's clan. The journey soured him, and arrival in such a large clan only made his mood all the worse. Nightshade and Hollykain (the only dragons who would get away with it) lovingly refer to him as a curmudgeon and a cranky old man. At heart, Zaps is an academic, and he used to deeply enjoy discussions in the pursuit of learning. However, he became so closed off after the move to the bramble no one but the dragons of his former clan had seen that side of him. He and Glitterbomb debate occasionally, but that was always a rare event. Skylight changed all that. He came into Zaps' life like a whirlwind, this anxious, pretentious rope of energy, whipsmart and dazzling. All jabs from his friends to the contrary, Zaps was not immediately smitten, and he'll insist upon that fact until his last breath. This young thing was the first dragon that Zaps met who genuinely knew more than him, which was in fact a great sting to his pride. So he graced Skylight with put upon sighs and scoffing, but never going far enough with it to drive Skylight away. Slowly, Skylight relaxed (proving to be significantly less arrogant than Zaps initially read him) and opened up just enough for Zaps to find a way to make sense of him. (He will grudgingly admit being smitten from this point forward, if pressed.) At some point along the way (Zaps can't recall, though Marun can point to the exact moment), Skylight became a fixture in his physical and mental space. They haven't ever discussed it. Their relationship bloomed in a slow comfortable way that makes calling it to light awkward. And well, if anyone had been unclear on the boundaries, Zaps unintentionally marked one: before he stepped on Skylight's tail and after. Skylight had intended to leave Zaps' lair space given the hour, and without thinking about it, Zaps pinned down Skylight's tail feathers and quietly suggested he stay. So he did, and so it remains. Unless Zaps is off on flight business, or Skylight is tending to hatchlings, Skylight wraps himself warmly around Zaps' neck and sleeps. |
