Lionel Cassidy is Chalcedony Platoon's chief medical officer and one of the few genuinely kind members of the platoon. His talents in biochemical manipulation allows him to adjust the exact chemical composition of the body to make sure everything is in order. If done correctly, he can heal wounds by forcibly speeding up tissue regeneration and repair, allowing for rapid recoveries. When not dealing with sentient bodies, he tends to his secondary specialization, aka his more stereotypically druidic talent: growing plants out of nowhere. Lionel often aids staff sergeant Guinevere with her own scientific ventures. Since she's blind in one eye and her remaining good eye is quickly losing its sight as well, she typically asks him to do the physical work, and he is always more than happy to comply.

Despite it being his secondary hobby, Lionel's love for plant life is so great that he has manipulated his own body structure to allow plants to sprout from his chest, which opens up like the leaves of a venus flytrap. Although many find his symbiotic experiments strange, Lionel is at heart mild mannered and compassionate; the fragrance and the delicate beauty of his symbiotic flowers are such that most at least consider him far more approachable than a moulting Marlon or unveiled Lucrezia.

The medical officer loves making flower crowns out of his symbiotic flowers and can often be seen randomly give them out to others. Ever since Lionel and Guinevere’s addition to the platoon, he has been growing plants together with Marlon, a fellow who specializes in potted plants. Lionel is a bit unnerved by the other's habit to roll around in flowers because it damages the plants, but he has refrained from questioning their practices in public. What comes from the land will return to the land eventually; Marlon is just accelerating the process like Lionel manipulates biochemical energies. To resent the second lieutenant for it would be hypocritical.
