In the soft hue of dawn, his newest invention glows a soft orange. He turns it over and over in his claws, fixing flaws, hammering dents out, adjusting tiny gears and screws. There is no stopping until it is perfect.

A technician like his father, he is obsessed with everything vaguely scientific and new. Who said you needed to be born of the Lightning to be good with electricity anyway?

He ignores the sleep nagging at the corner of his eyes, pushes sweat-slicked feathers away from his face, absent-mindedly wipes his oil-stained claws on an equally oil-stained rag. Somehow, during his midnight rush to put the finishing touches to his newest invention, he’s managed to smear dirt and motor-oil all over himself. His light-blue wings and dull scales are hardly recognizable under the smudges of black and grey. The only recognizable feature that seems to be untouched by the whirlwind of dust and grease are the bright red spines that stick up like a hedgehog’s spines.

In the morning, his mother will tut at his disheveled look, and his father will laugh.

For now, though, with nothing but the chirping of crickets to keep him company, he will keep working by candlelight, squinting at the tiny screws and manipulating gears, waiting for the day he will be recognized.
