The Lost Moonbeam
❁
"Stray too far into the shadows, and my stars will guide you home." ❁ |
In the Tangled Wood, there is a legend, a fable, a mighty myth that permeates all generations. It tells of the bitter envy between the Lightweaver and the Shadowbinder, two opposites always in conflict, always pretending not to be. In some versions, the Lightweaver is a benevolent and victorious god seeking to overcome her sister's petty tricks, and in others, the Shadowbinder is righteous and clever, using her wits to spite her sister's pride. And in some versions, neither deity is in the right, and while they squabble over who ought to rule the night, the moon chooses for itself. The moon is a cautious thing, drawing on the light of the sun as it creeps across the sky. Sometimes, it remains cloaked for its own safety, and sometimes, it blazes, standing in tall defiance of any foreign control. Above all, though, the moon is wise, and when the Lightweaver threatened to rip it from the night for good, and the Shadowbinder promised to extinguish it forever, it spread its power throughout Sornieth, so it could be called upon even if the sisters succeeded in working their magics. Moonbeams struck the ground, stunning pillars of light that shimmered until dawn, and when the sun rose, they vanished, replaced by dragons. These dragons were clever and quick, light on their feet and cool in their hearts, possessing the very best of their lunar mother's power. One day, they would be called home to the sky, and the night would see light once again, but until they, they kept the moon in hiding, disguising her brilliance from those who would steal it. |
One day, when the deities slumbered once more, the moon called her children back and took shape in the sky again, and while moonbeams once struck the earth, now they rocketed back to the sky. They were going home, and they were joyous. But one moonbeam remains lost, even to this day, which is why the Sornieth moon never truly looks full. They say she wanders the earth, bonded to her moon mother but ever resisting the call. The mortal plane needs her light yet, and she must cut through the dark nights to bring peace and kindness where it is most needed. She is a just being, a warrior whose heart lies with the weak and the helpless who need her more than anyone else, and she will never turn her back on Sornieth until her work is done. The moon will live forever, and dragons will not. Rhiannon enjoys telling this tale to the hatchlings who marvel at the stars glistening in her wings, and the silver that laces her feathers. She spins them a fantasy that brings them hope of a nighttime savior, someone who will protect them from the nightmares and the creatures of the dark. She gives them hope, something to believe in. And sometimes, she tells the story with so much emotion, it's as if it is her own. Bio by Tues. |
