Dragons can settle anywhere they please. Each elemental region has its pros and cons, though those who balk at settling in the Southern Icefield say it’s because the natives are too cold and haughty.

They would therefore be surprised to meet Aegis and learn that she is, in fact, an Ice dragon born and bred. This bright and cheerful dragon makes her home in the Sunbeam Ruins. She laughs often and has clear, bright eyes. She’s easily visible from a distance because of her flashing wings, her scales that shimmer like miniature rainbows. “The Sunbeam Ruins is a long way from the Southern Icefield,” you may say to her, striking up a conversation. “How came you here?”

As an Imperial hatchling, Aegis grew faster and larger than her peers. They frequently played together on the edges of the clan’s territory. Roving predators had learned that hatchlings were easy prey, and one day, Aegis and her friends were attacked by a pack of wolves. The Imperial, mighty even then, protected her smaller fellows with her wings. The wolves bounced off the glittering scales like stones thudding against shields, and with a cry and a shout, the clan guards chased them away.

The clan praised the young Imperial wholeheartedly. Her elders in particular saw a bright future for her: “She is destined to be a protector of dragons!”

And she took this to heart. With her clan’s approval, she changed her name to “Aegis”—the shield blessed by the gods. There were many dragons out there who dedicated themselves to the service of gods and dragonkind. Aegis hoped to be one of those warriors, too.

She left her clan, for they were a small group that was unequipped for training warriors, and found passage to the Sunbeam Ruins. She arrived there one clear morning and marveled at the many clans training their warriors and studying combat. She had found her new home.

Yet it was a gentler, kinder clan she found herself drawn to. Aegis wasn’t sure why she decided to make her home with Skystorm and Ashweather’s other dragons. They were all such docile drakes....Most, if not all, were untried and uninterested in combat. Then she started training with the would-be mage, Melek, and she began to understand.

As a child, she had recognized that many other dragons were weaker. It did not necessarily make them liabilities. No, they were precious, to be protected and nurtured so that they, too, could eventually become strong enough to protect others....Not everyone could be a warrior, but there were many ways to protect. There were many ways to help others grow strong.

Kind Melek was always so discouraged by his lack of magical talent. Aegis thought he needed to brighten up....He needed more sunshine in his life. She’d heard that for many dragons, familiars were a helpful source of comfort...and she believed she knew which one was best for him.
