There was a time, believe it or not, when Helix was a respected scholar. His theories were discussed, his findings largely accepted, his reputation prospering where others faltered long before. His studies revolved around the stars, and how one could interpret the position of encroaching Shade from their absence. Enterprising? Not particularly. But he found his niche, and was content to stay there for as long as he was allowed.

That didn't turn out to be long. After a decade or so, his papers on the Shade began turning heads. Began sparking not just discussion, but debacle, as former peers turned in unison to tear his findings apart. Why? Helix didn't know. Maybe they found heresey, or maybe they'd disagreed more than usual, or maybe he was just the next on the list of scholars in his college to fall out of fashion. What he did know, after a crossbow bolt narrowly missed his head one morning, was that he had to find somewhere else to be for a while. And fast.

That place turned out to be the Abiding Boneyard, against his best wishes. But when a priest you met five minutes before turns and vouches for your reputation and then asks you to join his caravan, what are you gonna do, say no? He had a reputation for being smart, after all. And so Helix joined the growing band of scavengers, offering his skills in navigation and a willingness to do what he could in exchange for...well, not being left for dead.
