"The name's Rex," the stranger said, nodding in greeting. Beaumont made no move to show he'd heard the other dragon. Instead, he kindly offered the pint to another dragon who was all too happy to accept. Beaumont didn't miss how Rex's eyes steeled at the slight, even though his smile remained plastered to his face. To rub it in, Beaumont let the other dragon know just who the real benefactor was. Beaumont grinned as Rex suddenly found himself surrounded by every poor sap looking for a free brew. Before the Pearlcatcher could disentangle himself from the hoard of rowdy locals, Beaumont was on his way out the door. "He's never going to forgive you for that, you know," a voice rasped from above. An obsidian fae lounged atop the over sized Inn sign, her inky black hide acting as natural camouflage against the pitch black sky. "Either you're the fastest dragon I've ever met or you have incredible hearing," he replied, genuinely surprised by her appearance. Her presence put him on edge. He was usually far more intuitive in new places. No creature, dragon or beast alike had been able to sneak up on him in years. |

"Uh-huh," he said. "Well, if you'll excuse me, I'll be on my way." "Wait!" she called after him. She took to the air and abandoned her nonchalance. Her wings fluttered uncertainly. Beaumont had been around enough Faes to recognize distress. He was beginning to regret his decision to go out tonight. He had enough problems of his own; he didn't need hers as well. "You're the one they call 'The Pillar', are you not?" The nickname raked across his soul, uprooting the pain he'd buried more than a life time ago. Beaumont glowered. His claws dug deep into the soil beneath his claws. His wings flared to their full breadth in one violent motion; his muscles bunched underneath his hide. He tensed with rage. He had half a mind to rip the Fae from the air and tear her fragile wings from her tiny body. He could do it too; had done it before. He took a step toward her, his body buzzing with murderous intent. To her credit, the Fae did not flee. In fact, she did not fear him in the slightest. That was a severe miscalculation on her part. "Give me your name, Little One," he demanded. He was stalking her now, taking note of her escape routes. She'd never be able to outrun him, not by land or air. Faes were not known for their endurance; Guardians, on the other hand, were made to endure. And true to his breed, Beaumont had endured. Oh, how he'd been made to endure. Images of his tortured charge flashed across his mind's eye, her harrowing screams filling his ears. He shook his head violently, forcing the past to stay firmly in the past. Fire ignited in his belly along with his anguish. He turned his back on the murky fae and slithered back into the dark alleys that he knew far too well. Killing had been all too easy until his enemies had come for the one he'd sworn to protect. How well they had succeeded. Some part of him had died along with her and the "The Pillar" was no more. "The Landing's Keep shuns none." Beaumont whipped around. This fae was testing his resolve. He wanted solitude and a dark, cool place where no one would recognize him. Preferably a place without irritating faes tailing his every move. "I swear allegiance to no dragon. I'm not the lairing type, miss. Now, please, be on your way." |
