Have you ever wondered what it might be like, to be a guardian's charge? Auxentius can't help but wonder. He can't help it, because his charge ran off into the night without so much as an indication. Did he do something wrong? Was he too loud? Too big? Had he offended the spiral, somehow? He couldn't remember much of the night that his charge disappeared. Blind panic, perhaps, and a storm as vicious as fate, leaving him terrified and unable to follow, his fear of thunder and lightning binding him to stay in shelter until it passed, the next week. By then, he had gone without a blackout for days, and he almost wondered if something in the spiral's actions caused them. By then, there was no trace of his charge. No trace of the happy, inventive spiral that had been there nearly from day one. Auxentius knew the meaning of the word lost that day, as he began his search for the spiral, following any lead he could grasp, sometimes feeling like he was right behind him, and sometimes like the whole world didn't have his charge in it. A flash of light, a blinding bolt of electricity, and Aux crashed to the earth, unable to rise as whatever had stricken him descended upon him, crackling electricity in its palms, and suddenly, Aux could no longer see, no longer breathe. He woke up, later, the smell of blood in the air and his body aching. The body of another not far off - the source of the smell - viciously mauled. Aux panicked then. What had taken it out? There had to be something there in the area, and he'd no idea what. What was out there? Aux, fearing for his own life in that terrible moment of horror, fled, not taking the time to examine the body, or to notice the blood on his claws. Auxentius didn't know that it was him all along, who had slain the other. He had no clue that he did things after he blacked out, and he still had no clue as to why he couldn't remember any unrest in his charge. Perhaps, just perhaps, it would be best if it remained that way, don't you think? After all, nothing could damage a guardian more than knowing that he was the source of his charge's ails. |
