Vigil's fairy mother took a mortal lover once, and he is the product of that union—a child that bridged the fragile divide between realms.

Now, he stands at another divide. Companion to the dying, Vigil watches with unwearied patience the slow declines, weathers unsurprised the sudden ends. He is no reaper, he ferries no souls to any underworld. Nor is he there for the benefit of the living, who have their own rituals and grief.
He is there to keep death company as it goes about its business, without judgment or any particular rush. He is there for the dying. As a nearly-mortal son of Summerland, Vigil knows the fluidity and profundity and inevitability of change. But, while what his father glimpsed in his journey across the sea was a miracle, what Vigil witnesses—again, again—is more inevitable than fate. Yet, every time, he remembers it as an event unique.
