Aura's sole consort and nurseryman of the Indigo Court, Katydid spends almost all his time in solitude, preferring to tend to the gardens and greenhouses clustered near the center of Anan. Though generally indifferent to other dragons, he has an exceptional affinity for plant life, and has bred a wide variety of unique hybrids for various uses, both practical and ornamental, over the years. He has a particular like for creating new medicines from his plants--though many of his remedies double as poisons if administered in incorrect doses. As consort to the vicereine, a great deal of matters relating to the Court must pass through him before their resolution, particularly when his mate is otherwise occupied. How he deals with these matters is largley unknown, however, for it is rare to see him and even rarer to hear him speak (though those that have exchanged words with him are immediately taken by his voice, so deep and gentle and vast that listening too long provokes the quiet, insidious terror of being lost and unable to get home.) Although it is generally accepted that Katydid and Aura are deeply entwined, the two almost never interact with each other, nor do they ever seem to reference one another in conversation, either directly or indirectly. Those born to the Court insist this is proof of the profundity of their bond, claiming that Aura and Katydid are so enshrined in one another's beings that to speak to or of one another would be no different than talking about themselves, and of course neither is nearly vain enough for that. In spite of Katydid's reserved nature, it was he who found and rescued Anukh after he was injured in battle and separated from Clan Athema, and it was he who continued to monitor the dragon's well-being as he recovered, even as Anukh warned him that keeping him there would draw Crag's attention and her wrath. However, when Crag did inevitably descend upon the Court in order to retrieve her lost companion, the Court allowed itself to be absorbed into Clan Athema without contest. In fact, they seemed to welcome their subjugation--to the point that one can't help but wonder if Katydid's actions weren't more calculated than they initially appeared. Like the rest of the Indigo Court, Katydid is mostly left alone by members of Clan Athema, and pays them the same courtesy, though he will sometimes wordlessly entertain Anukh in the gardens, or more recently, observe Abalone as he conducts his research. What motivates his interest in these two remains unclear--though one can't help but remember that it is Anukh and Abalone who are held closest to the heart of Lord Crag... |
