In the Shifting Expanse, there seems to be a do or die mentality. Either something is done right and done thoroughly, or everyone suffers for it. There is no room for mistakes, no margin for error. Leonora was steeped in this philosophy from the start, and at first, she made every effort to be as efficient as possible. There were few other dragons her age that could match her dedication and work ethic, and her clan was proud.

But then her visions began. They came sporadically at first, and Leonora was able to dismiss them as vague daydreams born of fatigue. She applied herself to her work on the lightning farms harder than ever, yet that only made it worse. The visions arrived with greater and greater frequency, hindering her from her work as bright flashes of color and sound exploded in her mind. Leonora eventually confessed to all that she had seen, convinced it held bearing on her world. The fleeting prophecies were too strong to ignore, yet none came to pass, and Leonora’s steady work was only further hindered by her prophecies, as was her good standing in the clan. Deemed a liar, a false prophet, and even a lunatic, she sensed her time in the clan was running short, and during a particularly heavy thunderstorm, she slipped into the night before they could imprison her.

At first, she traveled slowly, unsure of where to turn, but images of dense jungle, shimmering flowers, and pounding waterfalls began to fill her head. There were two dragons as well. The first, she mistook for a soaring tree until it looked her in the eye and smiled so calmly she almost fell asleep where she stood. The other, though, was all fire and light, and he flickered as if a mirage. Leonora’s heart nearly burst each time she saw the burning nobleman, and with new resolve, she set out to the Gladekeeper’s domain without a backward glance, allowing nothing to stand in her way.

Upon her arrival, she began to fear her nobleman did not exist. The visions began to fade, replaced more frequently by the benevolent tree dragon, until they stopped altogether. Distraught by this sudden change, Leonora sought shelter, hoping rest would bring her visions back. She found a patrol to lead her back to a safe camp, and to her surprise, as she pushed the dense foliage aside, the tree dragon of her dreams awaited her. Her name was Yavanna, and she was the clan leader. Behind her, though, stood the nobleman in all his shining glory.

Leonora couldn’t stop herself, and immediately she approached the shimmering Pearlcatcher, the words leaving her in a rush as she told him how far she’d come to search for him. At first, the incredulous look on his face terrified her; it seemed she’d only come to another clan that would turn their backs on her for her visions. But then, to her surprise, the Pearlcatcher caught her in the warmest embrace of her life and admitted that she was the dragon he was searching for, too.

Ever since, they have been inseparable. Leonora’s visions have returned, and they all pertain to the well-being of Yavanna’s clan. Whenever she is mystified by a prophecy, she need only turn to Halcyon for the answer. It is as if he is the key to every mystery in her life, and she would never trade his warm, playful presence for the world.
