"Apparently I didn't teach the lesson well enough the first time."

Cousat was born in a rural part of the Sevenbranch region of the Southern Icefield. He seemed almost barbaric in his rustic simplicity to his more sophisticated classmates at the Sevenbranch School of Magic, but he was a talented cryomancer and a gifted academic, and when he completed his studies, he was asked to stay on as a teacher.

He taught at the school for so long that he nearly became an institution in his own right. Right before his retirement, he had three final pupils at the school - the tundra Pentius, heir to the Wizard of Sevenbranch; the coatl Calendula, an orphan who had been abandoned by his family due to his dull coloring; and the fae Stormwing, a talented witch from a middle class background. The three were united in friendship, but that friendship fragmented when Pentius and Calendula were sparring in practice and the coatl's ice magic suddenly burst into flame, badly burning Pentius. The horrified coatl fled, and Stormwing left soon after to search for him, leaving Cousat with one very injured student.

He healed him as best he could, but he retired from teaching once Pentius received the title of Wizard from his father and began to govern Sevenbranch. He dwelt once more in a small clan on the outskirts, working as a translator and musing over a prophecy that his last pupils had overheard and what it might mean:

When the midnight sun shows its face in the sky
And drakes in its guise walk the earth
Ice will burn when the coatl returns
Once more to the land of his birth.

Heavens and underworld torn asunder
Await the midnight sun
For its coming alone can heal the rift
And reunite as one โ€“

Spirit and dragon, heavens and earth,
Fire and ice and arcane;
But unless the coatl is quick with his tongue,
All will fall to the tongue of the sun's flame.

Cousat became concerned when under Pentius' rule coatls began to be treated unfairly, but he didn't think the Wizard would listen to his old teacher, so instead he contented himself with doing what he could for the coatls in his small community, taking the young Eztli under his wing and teaching him linguistics so that he could better communicate with other dragon breeds before his pupil received a letter admitting him to his former school and left him for the capital.

Thinking that Pentius' problems with coatls might be resolved if only he could heal his friendship with Calendula, Cousat set off to find the coatl, who had hidden himself in a remote location on the Southern Icefield, attempting to quench the fire that burned within him by freezing it out. When he found him, Cousat regretted not going to him sooner, for Calendula hadn't been taking very good care of himself and seemed to care little for his own life, deeply regretting that he had nearly killed his friend. Though Cousat knew little of fire magic, he was a good teacher and worked with Calendula to help him control and contain his magic so that he would never again hurt someone through accident.

Word of what was going on in the capital was slow to reach them in their lonely location in the middle of nowhere, but finally news came to them that Pentius had taken in two skydancers named Midnight and Sun who had been found by Stormwing. Recalling the prophecy, Calendula decided that it was time to master his fear and return to the capital. Cousat accompanied him, and they arrived just in time to see the palace burning due to Sun's erratic fire magic and Pentius and Stormwing in danger. Calendula threw himself in front of his friends and fought fire with fire to protect them, while Cousat worked to shield the bystanders, noting that one of them was yet another former pupil - Eztli. Ez was finally able to calm Sun with his words, but though the physical damage to the surroundings was severe, the damage that Pentius had been inflicting with his rule was far worse. Cousat offered to once again take his three pupils under his wing, saying that he seemed to have failed them as a teacher the first time but would do his best to shape them for the better if they would decide to study under him once more. Shamefaced, the trio agreed, and Ez offered them a place on his island in the Starfall Isles.

He spent some time with his former pupils on the island of Prufrock, helping them reconnect with each other, with their magic, and with their values. In doing so, he realized that he missed being out in the world and resolved to travel further - he might be old, but there was still much he could learn.

Though Cousat seems simple, a shrewd and highly intelligent mind lurks behind his shaman's mask and rustic garb. He doesn't mind that others perceive him as an elderly, bumbling fool - all the better to surprise them with his powers when he sees a need to display them.
