Biography
Minerva sat on a rock gazing proudly down at her clan. It was dawn, the sun was awaking and so was her clan. Minerva watched as her clan slowly awoke. Silence became chatter and hatchlings began to run around and play. Older dragons shouted out greetings and joined each other for some nice plants, seafood, meat, or insects. Minerva smiled, the waking of a clan was always an interesting thing. Every morning was different from the next. Minerva chuckled to herself as she realized her sudden urge to know why every morning was different. Why did all dragons act the way they did? Why did hatchlings play, while older dragons didn’t. Lifting her head to the rising sun, Minerva let a calm smile on her face. She was one of the Arcanists, of course she would wonder. It was in her blood to have a yearning for knowledge. She didn’t wake up early every morning because she was second in command. No, she woke up because it was in her blood to observe and learn.
“Good morning, Minerva.”
Minerva swirled her head around to the voice that had snapped her out of her thoughts. It was Uojomo, the clans first command.
Minerva grinned and nodded back as a greeting. Her eyes, which were studying him, landed on his bandaged wing.
“Your wing looks like its getting better. It's a blessing it didn’t get infected.”
Uojomo looked stunned for a while, but smiled as he knew how observant Minerva was.
“Ah this little wound? Even an infection wouldn’t stop me!”
Minerva smiled, but stared Uojomo down with a serious look.
“The wound may be small, but it can kill the biggest dragon.”
Uojomo nodded, not bothering to argue. He knew Minerva was always right.
“Well I have to go visit another clan today, you are in charge for the day.”
Minerva nodded, she would try her best to replace Uojomo.
“Understood, I will do the best I can.”
Bidding each other goodbye, Uojomo headed off.
Minerva flew off her ledge and looked around.
“LFD! Stockings! Come meet me for a second!”
Two younger dragons flopped over. The wildclaw (Stockings) flying down from a tree, while the tundra (LFD) rushed out of a nearby den, robbing her eyes.
Minerva smiled at them. These two were her underlings, and today they would be tested on their leadership skills.
“Uojomo is gone today, so I will be in charge. I need you two to do the jobs I usually do. Can u handle that?”
LFD nodded eagerly, while Stockings let out a huge “YES” her eyes sparkling in excitement.
Minerva smiled,
“Good! Stockings you will be in charge of gathering and hunting parties. LFD you will patrol our boundaries. Report to me if anything seems off. I will be staying in the camp to make sure everyone is happy and deal with any problems.”
The two little dragons nodded with confidence and excitement.
“We will try our best!” They chorused, and rushed off to do their tasks.
Left alone to be a leader, Minerva went around the clearing asking if anyone was unhappy or needed anything. For the rest of the day, she attended the needs of elders and played with hatchlings who became bored. She helped LFD sniff out an intruder and helped Stockings choose the best dragons for each food finding patrol. As the day turned to night, and the sun began to set, Uojomo returned.
“Minerva!” he announced, “How was it?”
She flew over to him and settled down beside him.
“It was tiring, but amazing at the same time. Your job sure is hard.”
Uojomo let out a laugh.
“It is hard. But it’s very rewarding. Well I’m going to head in for the night, today was a very tiring day. The nearby clan wants a trade and we bargained for more than an hour!”
Minerva nodded in understanding and Uojomo headed back into his cave.
Flying back to her rock, Minerva watched as her clan slowly fell asleep. The chatter of dragons slowly faded into quietness. The soft silence of the night. As the moon reached its highest point, Minerva smiled. Today she had learned something new.
Although leadership wasn’t the easiest job, if you loved your clan enough, you will enjoy every second of it. The greatest reward is to see the smiling faces of those who you helped.
