Biography

Korin
nT0qXhF.gif

The Dragon God, Korin, is said to be a brutal dragon. His need to meddle in the affairs of his Chosen; haunt their dreams and plague their waking minds, makes him feared as much as he is worshiped. He is a bitter god, full of hate and contempt; yet he is just and wise.

The lack of wings with black leather skin and piercing red eyes make him stand out among all of the Astraean gods and goddesses. Polished obsidian statues carved in his like litter the lands, their ruby eyes always watching.

Few dare to anger him, but some do.

However, he wasn't always the fearful god that the dragons know.

Once long ago he was mortal, same as every other being, happily living his life in the Spirit Realm.

Korin was the leader of his large clan of Spirit Dragons, ethereal bodies allowing them to not only go where they pleased, but to harness and maintain vast amounts of magical energies. They traveled from realm to realm living life peacefully, learning all sorts of knowledge as they went.

When they ventured into the Shadow Realms, they quickly realized the realm itself was dying. It was a rare occurrence, usually only happening to the oldest of realms, but it was possible and the Spirit Dragons decided to stay and see if they could help prevent such a disaster from occurring.

They also discovered a clan of dragons that lived there as well. The Rugby Clan they called themselves. Their dark scales shimmered in the twilight and the only way one could tell where a dragon lurked was by the glow of their eyes, shining bright hues of purple from within the shadows they called home.

Entranced, Spirit Dragons began to take a physical form that mimicked the Shadow Dragons own, Korin included, and together both clans worked to stave off the ruin of the Shadow Realm.

Even together, they could not stop the destruction that was tearing the realm apart, even though they had slowed it greatly. The young Shadow Clan leader, a darkened purple named Klake, was the first to suggest they leave their realm home for the lands near by. Many from both clans agreed and the Spirit Dragons created a portal to explore the lands of Astraea.

The world was vast with many different species that called it home. Some seemed intelligent, others were clearly fueled by animal instinct. There were even other dragons that roamed the lands, however feral and blood thirsty they seemed to be.

It quickly became clear that the natives of Astraea were in trouble. They called out to their own gods, begged for help and prayed for peace. Both Shadow and Spirit Dragon alike wanted to answer their cries. Taking the forms of the people they had encountered, Korin, together with his mate Estiv, and the Shadow Dragons, Klake and Cassandra, ventured to the budding village that the people had named Tarnik. There wasn't much to it, a few simple houses and a blacksmith forge.

The people were relieved to see them, warriors from another land, and began to thank their gods above for sending the four to save them. The full horror began to rear its head as Estiv and Cassandra listened to the people's tale.

Dragons.

Dragons came and destroyed their homes, fed on their livestock, their children and fought against one another, raining blood from the skies. They lived in constant fear, never knowing if that sunrise would be their last or their children's last.

With promises to come back, the four returned to the Shadow Realm and called a meeting of both clans to decide what to do. After the rest of the clans heard the stories they had been told, they all quickly agreed that Astraea was where they needed to be. Not only were they going to help the peoples that lived there, but they were going to help their dragon brethren as well. Only; how?

The Shadow Dragons had no magics beyond the basic spells all dragons knew how to cast. They were fighters, warriors, they knew nothing of the magical arts. The Spirit Dragons were just the opposite. They possessed all the magical knowledge there was to have, but never had they used their teeth and claws to fight.

The Spirit Clan held a meeting themselves to discuss what to do, only asking along Klake and Cassandra to help answer any questions that may have arose. 'We possess the power to change them,' one of the Spirit Dragons spoke. 'We can enlighten our cousins and stop this needless killing of the people of Astraea.'

'No one Spirit Dragon can do such a thing.' Korin had tried to reason. 'There has to be another way.'

Everyone fell silent, heads bowed to the ground. 'The Shadow Dragons believe,' Cassandra started quietly, digging black claws into the grayed grass at her feet. 'We believe in the Airva; the beings who created the realms and gave us the will to be what we are now.'

'Airva?' Korin questioned, snorting and curling his lip at the foreign word.

'Yes,' she continued. 'The Airva were the original beings.'

'I know what we must do.' Estiv spoke up, first looking to Korin, then to the Shadow Dragons before bowing her head. 'Thank you. I ask that you leave us now; we have much to discuss as a Clan.'

Without words, the two Shadow Dragons walked away, leaving the Spirit Clan to murmur among themselves until Estiv spoke once more.

'We must create an Airva.' Her voice was firm and absolute. 'One who will be able to harness the power to show insight to our brethren.'

'And who would this dragon be?' Korin growled next to her. He knew his mate well, she was one to always try to solve the clans problems by taking them on herself. She meant well, but even this was a burden too large for her to carry.

Estiv turned her fuchsia eyes to him, lidded with her love and affection. 'We, as Spirit Dragons, must give up something as well. In order for this to work, we all need to give up our magics so that the Airva can manifest.'

'You are asking us to create a god, Estiv.' Korin countered. 'To do so would require everyone in the clan to want to do so and it would leave us with such little magic, we wouldn't be but a shell of what we are now.'

'That is true, but it is a price I am willing to pay if it means we can create peace for all the races of Astraea, even our own. We would have a home Korin.'

'We have one here, in the Shadow Realm, with the Rugby Clan.' He didn't like this idea at all. 'Besides, I cannot allow one of you to do this. It's my duty as Clan Leader to protect you.'

'And protect us you shall.' Estiv drew close, nuzzling under his jaw before pulling away. 'Korin, my love,' she started, closing her eyes.

He instantly recognized what she was doing, watching with wide eyes and pleas to stop as the rest of the Clan followed her lead. It was a simple spell to call one's magic to the surface and manifest it into a physical crackling orb of energy. They all had done it time and time again to help heal one another and maintain their new home. 'You can't do this!' Korin growled, claws digging into the dirt under his feet. 'We don't even know what it will do to a dragon!'

Estiv held the white ball of energy easily in her claw tips, offering it to Korin without hesitation. 'You are the strongest among us Korin, my mate and the leader of our Clan, who else, but you, should become the Airva.'

'How am I supposed to protect you if I am a god? What happens to our Clan? Estiv,' he pleaded, backing away as everyone drew closer to him. He could feel their energies overwhelming him, offering him their magics to take and combine with his own. His own power was racing through him, humming with a want to combine with the others even as he kept trying to distance himself. 'Estiv! What about you?'

'I will be fine Korin, as will the rest of our Clan.' Estiv took a deep breath and bowed her head once more. 'I revoke your claim, Korin, as Leader of the Spirit Clan and cast you into exile.'

'What are you doing?” He yelled at her, crouching down defensively as the entire clan kept pressing closer. 'Estiv, have you gone mad?'

'From this point forward,' with each step, Estiv drew closer to him and Korin found himself backed against the bark of the large tree they had begun to hold their meetings under. 'We will be known as the Airva Spirit Clan and be your most loyal of followers, Korin. Know that we do this for the good of all things. That we love you. That I love you.' When she finished speaking, barely whispering the final words, Estiv released her orb, physically pushing it against the scales of Korin's chest.

His own magics screamed in pleasure, grasping out and taking hold of his mate's magic, something he was so familiar with, it might have been his own. Korin's mind was still reeling, racing from the feel of his lover's touch, that it was too late by the time he realized the rest of the clan had followed her example.

His entire being began to beat in time to the magics that pulsed throughout his entire body. There was no pain, but he could feel his body change; could feel the different energies combine into one and consume him.

Korin's vision blurred, and everything grew white around him. The Spirit Dragon lost sight of those around him and he became light headed, staggering on his feet before dropping into a heap at the base of the tree.

When he woke, he was alone.

Blinking several times, Korin inhaled deeply and lifted his head. He could see he was still under the large tree, body curled as if he'd been sleeping soundly. He felt smaller, more compact, but just as strong as he'd been before, if not stronger so.

Shakily he rose to his feet, twisting his neck around to make sure he wasn't harmed in any way. Gone were his wings and the light purple scales he'd grown to love; instead replaced with black skin and a tail that was long and whip-like.

He could feel the power of his clan coursing through him as he took a tentative step, black claws digging effortlessly into the ground. Well former clan, he supposed. Estiv had invoked her right to cast him from the clan and no one had spoken out against her in disagreement. In fact, the entire clan had seemed to be in silent agreement about him being the right choice for this, even with his clear hatred of the idea.

While he could see the need to create an Airva, he didn't understand why it needed to be him.

Korin had been reluctant to lead the clan to begin with, only doing so with the guidance of his mate. Over time he had grown more confident though and had ultimately brought his clan to this place.

He took a second step, gaining his footing and adjusting quickly to the smaller size and shape of his new body. Then he took another step, and another still, until he was running from the tree and across the lands to where he knew the Rugby Clan called home. His feet made no sound as he ran over the grass and packed dirt, almost as if he wasn't touching it at all until he slid to a stop at the edge of the small Rugby village.

The place was abandoned. The only thing he could find was a simple black shield that was almost as large as he was small. Growling low in his throat, Korin clawed at the black metal, whipping his tail back in forth in a fit of rage as he tried to get his short black claws under the polished edge.

Why he wanted the shield so badly, he didn't know, but he finally managed to hook a single claw under it and pulled it up off the ground. Digging the pointed tip into the ground, Korin stood on his back legs as he curled his neck around the front of it to look at the underside. Three leather straps were crafted to the back of it; one larger that looked as if it could be carried at the shoulder and two smaller, clearly for an arm or foreleg.

Sitting back on his haunches, Korin held the shield out in front of him, peering into the distorted reflection of himself. Red eyes and black skin looked back at him, foreign from what he'd grown to know was how he looked. What had their magics done to him?

Snorting in disgust at himself and this entire situation, Korin decided to take the shield with him, clawing at the straps and underside until he was able to position it across his back. Standing, not bothered in the slightest at the new weight, he dug his claws into the dirt before he trotted along to where he knew the portal to Astraea was.

He knew the limitations to his magics before this, but he had no idea what it could be, if anything, now. An Airva, a god, that's what his former clan had made him against his will. And in return they expected him to create peace within the lands by giving freewill and intelligent thought to the dragons that lived there.

Well, Korin decided with a growl as he jumped for the portal. I will do as they ask, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.
