Pip was born with the nagging sense that he was just a breath away from some kind of breakthrough- that if he could just 'listen' more closely, if he could just take one step deeper into the invisible ocean of magic pulsing through Sornieth like blood through veins, that he would discover something amazing.

He joined the best gathering of mages he could find, living in a crystalline tower packed with fellow Arcane Fae (and any other type of dragon who was willing to either cram themselves into the Fae-sized accommodations or camp out on the lawn). It was the happy life he had dreamed of- surrounded by like minded dragons, a fantastic observatory to stargaze from, help getting the materials he needed for his magic experiments, a huge library.

Except he still couldn't quite explain that nagging feeling that he was missing out on something.

The easiest, safest type of magic he knew of was the class of spell that helps a dragon change their appearance, so Pip devoted himself to learning how to craft the scrolls that would let him create one for himself. The ingredients were the only stumbling block but with the help of Seirian, a traveler from Shadow that he had made friends with during her frequent visits, he was able to get his hands on what he needed.

Maybe using magic that changed something about his body would help him understand what he was sensing. The truth is that he wasn't exactly sure what he was trying to accomplish, but... well, there are worse goals than satisfying one's curiosity, aren't there?

The result was something he never would have predicted. The spell gave him brightly colored stripes like it was supposed to, yes, but that 'push' of magic also knocked him the one step closer to the streams of Arcane magic in Sornieth that he had been curious about. The very moment the spell was over, he could sense an odd tugging feeling pulling him from all directions- and that feeling was immediately followed by startled shouts and crashing noises as the different magic experiments his fellow Fae had been working on went haywire left and right.

Everyone in the tower chalked it up to some freakish natural accident- it started happening to all of them at the same time, after all, so how could any one dragon be to blame? Pip tried to believe that they were right. He wanted so badly for it to be a coincidence. How could be be having an effect on every single mage student in the entire tower? Surely it was just paranoia to think that the entire disaster was all about him.

Seirian was the one who put it all together and made him face the truth. The success of Pip's gene changing scroll, the pulling sensation he kept feeling when people used Arcane magic near him, the sudden problems with everyone else's work, and the fact that everybody's magic only continued to go haywire while Pip was nearby, were all too much to be coincidence. He argued and fumed and dragged his feet, but eventually he had to admit that staying at the tower would put all of the other mages living there in danger.

With a lot of huffing and pouting and sighing heavily, he signed himself out of the tower's roster and set out to travel through Sornieth with Seirian. He continues to make scrolls that change a dragon's patterns and breed, both to keep himself busy and to fund their journey.

Why doesn't he use one of those scrolls himself to change himself back to 'normal'? Well... it would be nice to have his old life back, but if you run away from a mystery you're never going to discover anything new, now are you?

(For better or worse, the Arcanist would probably be proud.)
