Historian
Curious - Passionate - Resourceful

The most ordinary type of morning, Darwin wakes up to find he’d fallen asleep with his face in a book and quill in hand, trying to write down a description of the armor of a long-dead heroine in detail. At least what he hoped it looked like, from what he’d gathered from books and storytellers, because Earthshaker forbid that he’d written down anything inaccurate.

Getting around the den, especially at morning, when you’re still not fully awake and your head is filled with things you need to do before you forget them, is easier said than done. He’d created a little labyrinth of maps, books and various other pergaments. Practical when the soulless working dragons comes there to make him do something they considered useful, like actually writing down something instead of being stuck reading his favorite stories, or when some know-all comes with their torch and pitchfork and try to convince him they know better, because that had actually happened. Not frequently.

But it is certainly not a practical way of living during normal conditions, and it always takes Darwin a couple of minutes to untangle himself. His usual first thought after he’d done that was “where did I put this or that chronicle?”, which results in another few minutes of turning the place upside down and starting his work.

If anyone comes in and sees the mess, he tells them that he’s got everything under complete control. If it only were that simple...

Since his hatching years, his greatest passion has always been the past. He loves reading, listening and writing it down over again, and if anyone wants to hear, he’ll tell them everything he can remember. Of course, nobody actually really wants to hear. They never ask for it, at least, although he doesn’t really care. He will go on and on about history, sometimes going as far as acting it out, although not officially. He just tells the stories and finds himself traveling through time in the minds of various dragons from long ago, bowing to queens and kings of his imagination, fighting battles for good or evil, cheat long-dead monsters in the mind of trickster heroes or build ancient civilizations that he already knew would fall apart eventually.

If he’s really lucky, he will find someone to listen to his stories, but most of the current clan is uninterested and will start talking to each other or leave halfway into the most thrilling stories. Very boring, but hey, that’s their problem.

The historian views himself as a misunderstood creature and considers those uninterested in his stories to be dry and boring, and he doesn’t like it, if that wasn’t obvious enough already. But some part, actually most of him, pities them. Poor little soulless things, unable to see the beauty of the past, too focused on current events or the future to enjoy spending time in the library or helping him with his storytelling. But he supposes that they don’t know what they miss.

When he has some extra time on his talons, he likes to read his favorite stories, and one of those is that of the creation of the world, followed by the first wars of the deities. He has seen the shattered remains of the Pillar of The World, which might have inspired him to start researching history in the first place. And this fascination has made him quite useful for the Igneous Clan, like a hundred misunderstood, passionate adventurers before him.

He heard rumors of that a shard fallen from the Pillar of The World had landed in a volcano in the Flamecaller’s territory. For a few days, nobody saw him, as he spent that entire time in his den, researching harder than ever, mostly maps which he scattered all across the room, but also as many books he could find on the subject of the old Pillar and speculations on where the pieces of it might have landed.

Finally, he thought he had found it, but the clan elders only rolled their eyes when he pulled a huge map into their lair with crosses marking possible spots and paths that he’d written down himself.

It only took a few days to convince them, and Darwin is sure it has something to do with the fact that the elders are older and wiser and not as stuck in the present as most young dragons. They were willing to hear about the shard he’d found, and even go looking for it. Together they searched for the volcano in the Flamecaller’s land with the most magical power, and eventually found it.

Nobody could tear Darwin away from the edge of the volcano for several weeks, taking breaks only to eat and rest, where he studied everything he could think of - temperature and minerals, working his way down and exploring caverns and documenting faded art left behind by ancient clans. He found old, forgotten stories written down, giving him a look into the past. This beautiful, thrilling place was his home - he was sure of it.

Now, his clan lives within the volcano and mines in and next to it, and Darwin tries to find new things about his home to explore, but he’s feeling restless. He wants to travel, maybe find the rest of the Pillar of The World, but he knows the clan needs their historian and would feel guilty to leave them behind, as it is his duty to educate them, so he travels by reading and studying maps. But he may look at pictures of Dragonhome and thinks, maybe, maybe he will one day help restore the Pillar and do the Earthshaker himself a favor.

Because you do know the story of how the Pillar was shattered, don’t you? Darwin would be very willing to tell you if you don’t. Well, it all began when the curious Arcanist spotted a light far in the distance…
