AQUILO

Aquilo was named after the North Wind, and it suited him perfectly. From the day he could fly, he soared on the backs of warm drafts, sailing wherever he pleased and never staying in one place very long. Despite his tiny fae stature, he has always been brash, believing that life is best lived without worrying over details that might keep him from experiencing all that there is out there to see. That's why, when he found himself falling for the sweet tundra girl of the Menagerie, he started getting anxious. His hatchlings hadn't even been born by the time he was off, trying to shake away the guilt that trailed after him and the memory of his mate's warm eyes the first time she had spoken with him. Aquilo traveled across Sornieth at dizzying speeds, landing to talk to a few and take a meal, then taking off again before he could get attached to anything or anybody. But still, even as he flitted about the continent, at night his heart ached for Topaz's warmth, and he found himself wondering, what did his children look like? How were they faring? Did they have their own mates now? What about Topaz? Had she moved on? |

The insatiable curiosity was what drove him back, slowly and painfully, to the Menagerie. He approached the clearing with his head low, avoiding Spinel's gaze when he glared at him. He could smell cooking--Topaz's cooking--and guilt bubbled up in his throat, making it tight. What could he ever say to make it all up to her? When she finally looked up to see him, Aquilo's heart broke at the mixture of confusion, sadness, and nervous excitement in her expression. She left her cooking to help up a tired-looking fae and walk with her to face Aquilo. "Our daughter," she said simply, and the fae's head snapped up, staring at Aquilo. Aquilo tried to keep his voice steady as he looked over his daughter in what he hoped was an approving, fatherly way. "But there were more," he said quietly. "They've passed on," said Topaz. She sat on her haunches. "Are you here to stay? Or will you leave again?" "I'll stay. I'll stay!" Aquilo rushed forward and buried his head in her neck, trying desperately to hide the shame and despair that was quickly overcoming him. But he kept to his word, and when Topaz's new mate saw him, he shrugged and nodded--after all, Topaz was not his charge, and the whole clan could see how hard the little fae was trying to help his old mate and their one surviving child. He raised Ajax's hatchlings as well, as though they were his own, and after a few weeks Spinel stopped hissing at him every time he came near. Aquilo still has a hoard of items he's collected over his months of travels, helping to quell his insatiable urge to travel. He can often be found picking them up and cleaning them each individually--though he slowed this habit when he broke his bottle of unicorn dust from too much care. He tells stories from all across Sornieth. It brings him joy to sit in the evenings with the other dragons of the clan and illustrate the ghost stories of the Tangled Wood, or the legends of the deepsea monsters in the Leviathan Trench, while dragons circled around him all listen carefully. His voice is much more inflected than that of other faes, making him easier to understand, and it sounds almost as though he is singing when he speaks. |
