Herne
The Bounty Hunter
Hunts and kills - for the right price Arrived in the Clarus Clan on April 25th, 2016 The Clarus Clan has made its alliance with the City - originally situated in Plague, but since then they have moved to the Dragonhome. And with an alliance, the Clan must accept both the good and the bad, all taken together by the Clan as their deal with the City. Now, the City has gifted the Clarus Clan with many good - even great - hatchlings in an effort to honour their alliance. Some of these dragons have even been destined to serve on the Clarus Clan councils - a Plague Pearl sister, and an Earth Pearl, as the two most prominent figures from the City. Others have gone on to carry important duties around the Clan, forming meaningful relationships with the Clarus dragons, creating a livelihood, building a better community. Making their parents proud, carrying the branding of their birth City well - sometimes with pride, sometimes with the desire to forget - but always carrying the name of the Clarus Clan with dignity. Many of the dragons sent - sometimes saved - from the City have been beloved gifts. Herne, however, is not one of these gifts. |
He is blunt, forceful, cruel - and somehow, as glamorous and vain as a pristine Pearlcatcher. |
Other dragons flock to him, soaking up his energy as if it were their life-force. There is something magnetic, addictive about him. And he is not phased in the least by any of it. In fact, he enjoys the attention, and will preen in front of a crowd if they beg for it. Really, he loves the control, the effect, he has over others in this way. Dragons want to know more about him, and they want to be around him. But he does not take their attention for long - he gets bored, and is easily irritated in large, or even mid-sized, crowds. So he slips away, and lashes out at anyone who gets too close. As a solitary creature, he cannot be in large crowds for long, despite his urgent cravings for attention. This tension within him only makes him more apathetic to other dragons. His disdain for the wellbeing of others is quite apparent. This Skydancer was ruthless even as a hatchling. When he was but a few days old, he almost killed his own brother. Since then, Herne’s parents had to separate him from Sullivan, even though Sully was older (although by just a few moments) and as the eldest, Sully should have been able to keep Herne in line. The two brothers loved each other, but in a strange, competitive way - perhaps a destructive way, too. Since then, his parents knew that Herne would have no respect for age or authority - that Herne would be a wild card, uncontrollable and uncaring. They were not wrong. Herne’s father is a hunter of artefacts and monsters, of the unexplainable and irreplaceable. Vorom hoped that his sons would join him in the family business - but Herne was destined to be a hunter of another type. The urge to track, to capture - and yes, even to kill - was rooted deep within the white-and-pink dragon. He became a bounty hunter. At first he left the City solely hired by other dragons within the City who hoped to find departed family members, or fleeing enemies. He would track down dragons who had wandered away, ran away, escaped, disappeared, been kidnapped - there was a lot of tracking to do, but he did it well. It was not long before others from outside of the City asked him for his services. And then, the parents of an exiled Coatl asked him to help them. Funnily enough, it was his father’s creator, Lilac, and her mate Florence, who wished for Herne to find their son, Ivan. They would pay him a hefty sum to bring back their child, although Herne was more interested in the hunt than in the pay. Still, the pay was not something to scoff at - and so Herne set out on the hunt. He followed Ivan’s trail from their birth City to the northern forests, where he had heard the allied Clarus Clan lived. Herne had never been this far north before. And although he found Ivan easily enough, the following discussion between the two Plague-borns changed Herne’s mind about this hunt in particular. Ivan promised him that his parents would not pay in treasure for his return, but in blood; there would be no proper reward in return for his work. Herne was spited, but refused to return to the City. Instead, he wrote a hastily-scrawled letter to his family - explaining, but not apologizing, that he would not be returning home. |

Since then, Herne has lived in the Clarus Clan beneath the Willow, and has worked from outside of the Clan’s territory. Besides Ivan, Herne’s closest companions are Gossamer and Neopolitan. All three are hunters, although they tend not to hunt together. Herne keeps them as his companions, but does not count them as his friends. He knows that Neo, at least, may feel loyalty to him, but she would not hesitate to throw him to the umbra wolves without hesitation if it meant saving her own scales. And he would do the same. Besides, caring for other dragons would only weaken Herne. Despite his commitment to withstand friendship, shock consumed him when Gossamer left the Clan. The two Skydancers had been hunting together for years, ever since Herne joined the Clarus dragons. To see Gossamer leave without hesitation as soon as the Sidhe invasion grew dangerous, it shook Herne to the core - it betrayed him... it broke his heart. Herne was granted safety by the Fair Folk, who admired his brutality, and so Herne remained; but Gossamer was chased out by the vicious spirits. And although Herne understood deep down that had the tables been reversed, he would have done exactly what Gossamer did, the hunter could not forget how Gossamer had hurt him. |

Herne does not wear flashy clothing or bright accessories. These things only succeed in distracting the hunt, attracting attention when he does not care for it. He dresses in simple black and white, covering his scars and masking himself physically and emotionally.
One day, however, he received a necklace in the mail. In celebration of the Clan's alliance with the Plague City where he was born, Herne was sent a gift from his family - his brother. Suspicious, Herne inspected it thoroughly for curses. To his surprise, he found it lacking in any sort of spells. With slim hopes, he donned the necklace - and has not removed it since.
It is the only fashion statement he cares to make.
