Biography
Full name: Calamity Goes by: Calamity Role: Seer Friend(s): Ebb (apprentice) Romantic interest(s): Galeras (deceased) Relative(s) in the clan: Malu (father), Sentis (daughter) Born under a bad star, Calamity grew up with sweltering headaches and dizzy spells that one day matured into full-blown visions of catastrophes. Her childhood was a pleasant one. Raised by her devout mother, Calamity grew to find beauty and the touch of the gods in all things. But she was also frequently visited by her more errant father, whose research often led him far afield. And between the two, she learned a healthy respect for all things living, for all things are touched by the gods, and all things work because of fascinating mechanics. From her childhood, she knows most classifications of butterflies, though she doesn't have the same passion for them as her father. Instead, she grew up hoping to make a living at fishing. That is until her first bad swell of Sight almost killed her fishing crew. Her mother took her to the local clerics, and they told them both that Calamity's visions would only get stronger as she grew, and that perhaps time away from Fishspine Reef would do her some good. Calamity left her parents and her birth name behind when she left home. She wasn't sure quite where she would end up, and she was sad to leave the sea, but she had hope that one day she'd find a place where she felt like she belonged. Calamity met Galeras on the road. She had seen the snapper faintly out of the corner of her eye a few times now, and when she met him, she knew him instantly. Intimidated by his fierce expression, but amused by his lewd but enthusiastic exclamations in coatl, she watched him for a time as he attempted to outrace an irritated ram. Once he had managed to dissuade his assailant, Galeras was tending a few scrapes he'd gained in the assault. Calamity giggled too loudly, and he turned spitting towards her in the same half-mangled coatl words, demanding what she was laughing at. "My good sir," she replied sweetly, "only your misfortune." But he clearly didn't understand her. "See here! Speak draconic!" he demanded. "But you're not..." And a moment of understanding passed through her. The curse he carried was writ clearly in Galeras' blood for any and all to see. Its exact nature, its stipulations, and its means of breaking were far from her, but Calmity knew that perhaps he was not fully aware of the situation as she understood it. Fascinated by this woebegotten snapper, Calamity decided to travel with Galeras for a time. The two were a good pair - she was canny and wise, but often overcome with portents of disaster, while he was guarded and brusque and often spoke in tongues when his dander was raised. Neither had much care where they settled. Galeras was a wind dragon, and the wanderlust was strong with him. So, instead, they traveled, eventually ending in Dragonhome. There, Calamity's visions subsided as they visited the clans and enjoyed the silence and vast landscape between each one. Peace, it seemed, was strong here. But Calamity's peace was short-lived. After a few years of peace, raising hatchlings and watching them choose life among other clans or service to the gods, the two arrived in a clan called Oakrest. Near Oakrest, Calamity's visions returned. Feelings of great horror and evils flooded her waking moments. And when she tried to warn others, they merely shook their heads and said trouble was to be expected considering the lair seemed to be built over a series of tombs. And for a while, that was all that seemed to be the cause of her troubles. Then, one evening, her mate was attacked. And though the mighty Hunters of Oakrest caught the assailant, Galeras' fate was sealed. The wound proved fatal, and the mighty snapper breathed his last. Calamity's visions worsened after that. She spoke often of 'the thing of bones and dust' beneath the Citadel and also 'the ancient king' sometimes using the names Almarra, Vantry, and Elscott in an effort to explain what she kept seeing. And none quite knew what to make of her half-mad ramblings. Encouraged by Copperlight, the clan's spiritual leader, to perhaps take time away to heal from the loss of her mate, Calamity only spat in the sand and said "Your fates are as sealed as the tunnels will be by week's end." She has not been seen around Oakrest since. Rumors are that she has moved to a clan to the South to recover.

Seeking to recenter herself, to recover some semblance of peace, she decided to travel first to reconnect with family. Though her mother had long ago departed, she had heard that her father was in the Starfall Isles, still entranced in his studies of butterflies. Guided by information sent in infrequent letters to parents in Oakrest by their children who had migrated to the island of Prufrock, she made the journey that had once been undertaken by one of her daughters. Her reunion with her father and daughter was both joyful and painful, for her snapper child Sentis reminded her all over again of the loss of her mate. Still, it was nice to see living proof of his legacy, even if she would never again hear him speak in tongues when exasperated. She had hoped for peace in this new place, but such hope was in vain. She slept fitfully in her father's lair, plagued with a new series of visions. Instead of beings of bone and dust lurking in tunnels far beneath the earth, she saw shadowy armies amassing behind a veil, searching and probing for weakness, any weakness, that would allow them through to the mortal realm, heard cackles in the darkness, the smell of death and blood and plots that spanned centuries dripping from a monochrome visage. Though many decided the whole family was mad or cursed, the prophetess was not entirely dismissed out of hand. A traveling fortuneteller spent time with Calamity, working with runes and cards to try to make sense of her visions, while the exorcists and others in charge of the clan's defense redoubled their efforts to shore up the veil, that thin layer of protection between them and another realm. It remains to be seen whether their efforts will be enough to prevent her visions from becoming reality. Some of her visions, however, have come to pass, making even the least superstitious clan members worry about her darker premonitions. She spent several days following Eztli around, muttering about two princes making three rulers, about shadows glowing in the sky blowing in with the wind, about hidden roots under the earth waiting, waiting, always and forever waiting to be found again and brought to light. He finally realized the meaning of her words when Shadowstar came to Prufrock and reinvented the government and Vespers was found in the tunnels under the island. |
