Shady Emblem
Zibah, or Zi for short, was raised on cautionary tales that almost always involved some poor foolish dragon making bad decisions and being lost forever in the Tangled Wood. She knew that while some of the stories were figures of speech or fairy tales to teach wisdom to hatchlings, the bare bones of most of them were also literally true. The Tangled Wood has precious little mercy for those who aren't careful enough while trying to slip between its thorns.

The flip side, though, was that her home was beautiful beyond words. How could anyone possibly understand the soft glow of the luminescent mushrooms, or the complete peace of utter silence, unless they experienced it first hand? The idea that her beautiful home should be thought of as nothing more than a dangerous nightmare trap by outsiders bothered her so much that she decided, when she grew up and struck out on her own, to hire herself out as a guide to travelers who wanted or needed to enter Shadow's territory.

But instead of realizing what a well qualified guide she could be, everywhere she went to offer her help the travelers response was always sideways looks, lowered voices, and obvious mistrust. 'You know how those Shadow dragons are,' she would hear them saying to each other when they thought her ears couldn't catch it. 'They're always working up a trick or figuring out how to get one over on everybody else. You can't trust those Shadow mages. What if she decides it sounds funny to abandon us in the middle of the Wood?'

Angry and bitter at the backlash from all these outsiders, Zi returned to explore the Tangled Wood in solitude. Instead of studying to become the pure mage that everyone assumed her to be, she trained herself as a more physically focused warrior- half out of the desire to vent her frustration by throwing herself into combat and half out of spite. She wanted the outside world's assumptions about her to be as wrong as possible.

She spent nearly all of her time in combat practice, her strikes aimed as much at the critical voices in her memories as they were against the strange and crafty creatures she encountered with her claws, until one day she came across a pitiful sight- a blustering, naive scholar named Lewin, hopelessly lost in the thorns but somehow not sensible enough to realize how much danger he was in. He honestly seemed to be of the ridiculous opinion that being lost was according to his plan.

She agreed to help guide Lewin through the Wood to wherever he was trying to go, thinking she was just saving the poor dope's life as he passed through to some other destination. Imagine her surprise when he told her he not only wanted to stay, but that he was hoping to learn to appreciate Shadow magic and that he understood his best chances were to have a guide like her who knew the element inside and out.

She accepted his request to stay with him and lead him on a temporary basis at first- if he became a pushy, arrogant sort she wasn't about to agree to be stuck with him long term- but his curiosity turned out to be more adorable than irritating. Finally, here was someone who wanted to learn about the beauty in the shadows. And if he wanted to distill that beauty into bottled magic with alchemy, so what? The Wood is practically oozing with more than enough magic to borrow from.

It's a good thing they're both patient, because Lewin doesn't seem to realize what a long way he has to go. It's been months and he still dresses like a tourist.
