Boreas

"Even the hottest fires must be tempered."

Personality

Boreas seems to be out of place in the Bellworks. He's rarely seen by outsiders because he is chronically shy, and he prefers to keep to himself unless he knows someone very well. He hasn't connected very well with the others, but they generally don't have problems with asking him to do his job. He has been described at times as a Fae with a Ridgeback's habits, and if something goes missing it can usually be found in his nest somewhere.
Loyalty has never been an issue with him, the only problem is that his loyalties often lie elsewhere. He can be an outrageous flirt with anyone who comes near him and he uses this as a tactic to get out of tight situations, especially when his honesty is called into question. He is not interested in romance, however, and is disinterested in getting truly close to anyone.

If he can tell a small lie he's more likely to go with an even bigger one, the biggest one he thinks he can get away with. Habitual risk-taking has gotten him into trouble more than once and to hear him tell it, he arrived at the Bellworks as part of a dare. He doesn't trust easily and seems to only have gotten really close with the other Faes, who he treats as a surrogate colony.

In spite of his issues with honesty and his tiny sticky finger issues, he is well-regarded by many other members of the Bellworks, and he is courteous to a fault. His curiosity earned him his place in the projects, where he controls the climate and keeps the dousing house at the proper temperature.

"Ice grew on my wings but I hardly noticed, it wasn't anything like where I had been- where I should be. The ocean beneath me was as dark as the sky overhead, and I only had those fantastic ribbons of light to guide me until I saw the glowing sky over the Wastes. I saw those things, you know, the ones down below in the mists. I would have fought them too, but your food smelled so good..."
-Boreas telling stories around the dinner table

History

Boreas just showed up one day with ragged wings and clearly having seen better days. He claimed to have flown all the way from the Southern Icefields, and by his appearance Uskir and the others decided it must at least be partially true. He said that the cold didn't bother him, but he's been permanently marked by some kind of frostbite, as the lower portions of his arms and legs and tail are much darker than the rest of him and always feel colder to the touch.

He took a long time settling in, and didn't talk much with the non-Faes at first, preferring not to fight with being understood by the rest of the Bellworks. It can at times be hard for him to use his fins to communicate, so he painted a bright pattern on them to make the more subtle movements easier for the others to see.

For a long time Boreas had no job, keeping to himself in a crevice of the lair that faced the open ocean, where he was away from the main bustle of activity and the hottest parts of the forgehall. He spent a lot of time making snow and ice for his nest with his magics, and using the wind created where his cold domain ran into the warmth of the others to keep the area comfortably cool. It was after Arrak discovered that he had made Fae friends out of snow and ice that he tried to get their visitor more integrated into the Bellworks, hoping the youngster would open up more if he got to know more of the residents.

He discovered a certain delight in the knowledge that being able to properly cool the items being made was just as important as heating up and casting molten metal, and he took to his job as the douser quite happily. Sometimes he can be heard singing to himself in the dousing house in a high sing-song voice. As he slowly relaxes around the others he is joining into more and more of the social aspects of the Bellworks, lending his magic to various kinds of experiments with the hatchlings, teaming up with Uskir and the illusionist to make shadow puppet plays or act out stories to entertain the little ones when things are quiet.

He has absolutly no interest in partners and eggs. While Boreas doesn't mind hatchlings, particularly, and he does like to teach them things, he ignores the nesting grounds completely and doesn't show anything more than a passing interest in anyone else. Since he came to them as an adult the rest of the Bellworks assume he has someone waiting for him wherever he came from and don't put much stock in his flirty ways, which even the most monogamous resident won't reprimand him for, since they know he's not really serious.

He doesn't and hasn't shown any signs of betraying the Bellworks, but he isn't really loyal to them either. He has no connection or interest in the Flamecaller, and has said that he might leave if the Works move any closer to the volcano. He keeps a little shrine to the Icewarden in his nest, although his statue isn't made out of ice because it kept melting- Kisni found a glassblower to make him one out of frosted glass instead.
