Her eyes are large and almost mournful, and there is something of a hidden grief in the cadence of her voice and in the droop of her wings. At the touch of her claws, bones knit themselves together, twisted plants weaving between them in the place of muscles and yellow-splotched leaves to cover them like skin.

But this is not all Royeux can do, only what she was taught by her mentor Aravir. Of late, she has found a darker skill, warping flesh and blood the same way she controls vines and moss. It scares her, the way muscles twitch as she lays her hands upon them, the way a movement of her fingers can move a living thing like a spidering puppet.

She hides away, most of the time, in the mud and the reeds where the earth slopes down to meet the water. And she wonders, she wonders what in the name of all that is bright and beautiful was Plaguemother thinking, to give her the gift of control, of changing and infecting? Should such a power not have been given to someone brave, someone fierce and devoted and steely-eyed, to fight the Shade, to bring glory to the Plaguebringer?

Not to some small and trembling thing, her horns glittering and wound about with flowers and her feet stained with mud from digging up weeds at the side of the river.
