"I feel more comfortable as a coatl." Though born a pearlcatcher, Vellum spent his early days surrounded by coatls - visiting his uncle and his uncle's coatl mate Ez, playing with coatl hatchlings in Blip's hatchling library, and exploring Coatl Cove. He always felt he had been born in the wrong body, that he should have been born in the shape of most of the clan's residents, so as soon as his reading level was high enough, he began researching methods of changing his form in the depths of the library. He was afraid to ask the reference librarian Winterhain for help after the grouchy pearlcatcher scoffed at the notion that anyone would want to be anything other than a pearlcatcher, so he did his research alone, save for the times he studied silently alongside Winterhain's son Blain when the perpetually ill dragon was well enough to come into the archives. Eventually he found the spell he sought - a way to shift his form into that of another dragon species using his own pearl as the catalyst - and cast it right there in the library, much to Blain's astonishment. At first nobody believed it was him, and even his own parents doubted him, but his inkblot-like markings were identical, and the usually shy Blain spoke up to confirm his identity. Vellum has been much happier since his transformation into a coatl, and his family's tried their best to be supportive of him. Most of the clan's coatls are amused rather than offended, flattered that he wanted to look like them. He has offered to teach the spell to some of the clan's non-coatl residents, though most have politely put him off or outright refused him. Vellum is a skilled papermaker, ink mixer, and bookbinder. He crafts the ink, makes the paper, and binds the books that the other dragons in the clan use to take note of their research. He rather enjoys mixing new and vibrant colors of ink and paints for Jan to use in his illustrations and for Kouta to use in Skah's salon. |
