There was hatred from the moment of their birth.
Chara hadn't even opened their eyes yet, and already there were rumours, muttered words and hushed exclamations. "Demon! - Red eyes! - The warning! - Plague, plague, plague." Chara was still young, and did not understand the implication of these words, but they certainly understood the raw emotion behind each whisper. Over time, Chara pieced together the reasoning for this unprecedented hatred. There was an ancient prophecy, Chara realized, one which foretold of a demon reborn in the body of a dragon, one with blood-red eyes and a specific colourization, with swirled markings along their body and tail, with gem-bright mosaic wings. The superstitions warned of this reincarnation, claiming disease and chaos would follow in the dragon's wake. It was deemed that Chara was this dragon. Needless to say, this made for a terrible hatchling-hood. Chara was bullied, leading them to realize that draconian kind was spiteful and filled with a bitter despair - nothing would save the species from themselves. Chara became just as bitter, directing their hatred outwards to their Clanmates, to any dragon foolish enough to even look at them. Over time, Chara built up a thick enough skin that the bullies' taunts and jeers slid right over them - the young Fae became cold and steely, violent even. It proved to be too much; when Chara was old enough, they ran away, leaving behind their forsaken home. Chara flew on, not even stopping to hunt. They were tired, sore, starving; their body was unable to handle this abuse and started to decay from within. Perhaps they are right - I am filled with rot, I will only bring illness to myself, Chara found themselves thinking, more and more frequently. The same spite and despair that had filled their birth Clan was now spilling over Chara, as well. Before long, Chara found themselves at the western-most edge of the continent, hovering above the Starfall Isles. Their wings were trembling with the effort of keeping in the air: with a sigh, Chara collapsed to the cliffs below, no longer able to fly further. They landed on the edge of a steep pink-crusted cliff. The fall past the cliffs looked deadly. Good thing I landed on the cliff, they thought. Then they remedied that thought, and realized the end was near. There was an escape, an opportunity to abandon this worthless life . . . All they needed to do was - Chara threw themselves over the cliff's edge without further thought. As they fell, they closed their eyes tight, their wings furled around their body, in preparation for the final landing. It never seem to came. Finally, Chara opened their eyes, only to see a flowerbed surrounding them, bouncing petals and and blushing pollen all around. They had survived the fall, but Chara was struck by the wonders of these Arcane flowers to realize it. "Oh my Arcanist! Are you okay, little one?" a voice sounded from above. Chara turned to see a white-and-fire Tundra standing nearby, a hoard of flowers in one paw, shock evident in his expression. Chara struggled for words, but the Tundra did not seem to notice. "It's alright. I will help you - my Clan and I will help you." The Tundra was by Chara's side instantly, and already helping bundle the broken Fae carefully for the journey to this mysterious, helpful Clan. "My name is Asriel, by the way. What's yours?" "Chara," the Fae found themselves saying, surprising themselves. What was it about this overly-friendly Tundra that had Chara's heart warming, their Plague eyes misting with tears? Perhaps there was hope after all. |
