Justice, eternal and cruel

"None now live who remember Jupiter as he was in life, at least two centuries ago. A vain and vicious thief, he robbed his living off of unfortunate travelers along the coast from the Sunbeam Ruins to the Ashfall Waste, with many souls falling victim to his claws and blade. But perhaps justice or karma does truly exist in the universe, as it came to be that a beautiful and deeply cursed talonclasp pendant fell into the bandit's giggling clutches. Unaware of the danger, Jupiter kept the trinket for himself to wear, and over the years the curse wrought a terrible vengence. He found himself compelled, forced as if by an unnatural hand, to bring his cutlass down on the very same thieves and highwaymen he used to count himself among the number of, and even death could not save him as the curse extended his lifespan far beyond even the rotting of his own physical body.
Almost nothing recognizable remains of Jupiter now, as he shambles on along that same Light-Lightning-Fire coast he stalked in life. Nothing but a smoking, blood-tinged shell of energy encasing a mottled skeleton, encrusted in tarnished finery and caked in decay, still clinging to a rusty cutlass and the pendant that refuses to allow his soul any rest. Just know, unscrupulous merchants and thieves, that if you see the spectre draw his sword, that you are already far beyond all hope of escape." |

"Still there?" Calliope asks you, once she's finished her story. At first you can only nod mutely, but then you recall the snapper's blindness and thank her for her time and company. She smiles vaguely to your left, runes and snake scales glittering bright in the glow of the campfire.
"Oh, it's no trouble. That was one of my favorite ghost stories as a hatchling, but I don't get to tell it so often anymore," she says pleasantly, before stretching and pulling herself to her feet. The serpents using her sturdy frame as a perch shift and slither to find new bearings as she moves. "If you're going to be moving on from this place soon, you should be careful. Never know when Jupiter might strike, eh?" You can tell by her grin and tone that she's only joking, but it's now that you recall faint hints of old blood and metal on the breeze during your travels up from the south to reach the Beacon. Perhaps there's some good reason why the dragons in this region aren't huge fans of that story. |
