Biography
For the longest time, there was an empty longing in Walnut’s heart. From the moment his egg split open, a sense of hollowness sat low in his chest, as if something critical were missing. It was like a gear lost from a clock, or a thread missing from a woven rug, and instead of seeing the world straight on, it felt off-kilter in a way that words could never explain. Even when his mother tried to prompt him into explaining what kept him from feeling whole, Walnut faltered.
And then his father brought him along on a trip across the Shattered Plain. The trip itself was of little consequence, but the destination, Nectar’s birth clan, made all the difference. At first, Walnut stuck close to his father, surrounded by unfamiliar dragons and unsure of his place among them, but then the flowers began to bloom underfoot with the approach of Fern and Maple.
At that exact moment, standing before his grandparents, Walnut realized that he was home.
Convincing his father that it was all he wanted to stay with his grandparents was not terribly difficult. Nectar understood full well what it was like to seek out a true home, a home that felt right, a home that filled one’s bones with happiness. It helped that he knew that his parents would be fully supportive of their shy grandson, and before long, Nectar was sending for Walnut’s things and making sure his son would be well cared for in his former clan.
When Nectar finally left, certain that all the necessary arrangements had been made for Walnut’s happiness, the faintest hint of hollowness returned. It wasn’t quite the same. It wasn’t the wanderlust that made Walnut beg to accompany Nectar on the journey, and it wasn’t the absence of a place. Walnut eventually realized it was the absence of another dragon, and even with his grandparents doting on him, he dwelled on the vague sense of loneliness that haunted him, polished the occasional gemstone to keep himself occupied. This habit of refining gems, along with his skill at crafting jewelry or sewing the gems into sparkling garments, caught the eye of the clan’s resident rock-breaker, a Snapper named Birch. She loved what Walnut could do with even the smallest of gems, and the few gems she could keep for herself, she brought to him, asking simply that he make bracelets or other plain adornments. Some of these, she gifted away, but she began to cherish them more and more even as she began to cherish Walnut’s company. He too felt a similar attachment, and they steadily progressed from partners in gemstones to partners in love, brought together by a mutual fondness of valuable stones and by some quiet force that filled the second void of Walnut’s life.
He has not felt empty since.
