Even as a hatchling, Fullmetal was an alchemist of note. Though he was (and still is) brash, hot headed, and quick to anger, he undeniably had a true talent in the alchemical arts. After a terrible accident that he should not have survived and cost him and his brother Alphonse dearly, Fullmetal signed himself up to be a court alchemist for his previous home. He needed access to restricted research and state funds to travel in order to find the cure for his mistake. When the government of his last home proved too corrupt, he begrudgingly left to follow Orion. At first he resented how often Orion would check in on him, and how he made Rain, Thistle, and Edur constantly follow him around, but now they get along at least amiably.

Fullmetal is now more careful with his alchemy, but that doesn't mean he's careful with himself. He's pretty much always injured or at least banged up in some way. He probably doesn't even know where all his bruises even came from. Of course, it would be one thing if he was just being downright reckless, but he does feel he has an obligation to his brother and their new clan family, and will do anything to protect them. A lot of these mysterious injuries of his come directly from his fighting to defend the ones he loves.
