Biography
Wikipedia wrote:
Gertrude Caroline Ederle (1905-2003) was an American competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder in five events. She had poor hearing since childhood due to measles, and by the 1940s she was almost completely deaf. Trudy taught swimming to deaf children.
On August 6, 1926, she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel, approximately 240 km (150 mi) in 14 hours and 34 minutes. Her record stood for 24 years. Among other nicknames, the press sometimes called her "Queen of the Waves.
She died at the age of 98 and was interred in the Woodlawn Cemetery in The Bronx, New York City. Ederle was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame as an "Honor Swimmer" in 1965.
