A B O U T - - - - - - -
A creature of habit and whimsy, Anathema is known for her strange games and seemingly sporadic routines. No one is quite sure how she does it, but even if her rules are a bit eccentric and her advice covered in riddles, she manages to keep the clan together with a certain ease that few can replicate. It's for this reason that those under her care are able to relax; they know that as long as she considers them hers, she will watch over them with adoration and make sure of their safety.

Despite how responsible she can be, Anthema knows very well how fickle she really is. One of her top priorities- aside from her clanmates- is her own amusement. This has, naturally, created quite a few bad habits. All that she finds amusing or interesting is held close with a fierce sort of possessiveness, and all that is tedious or irritating is tossed away easily. Any dragons that aren't deemed one of hers are either sent to the Shadowbinder or declared open season for the more... vicious members of the Abyssal Sanctum. Of course, surrounded by myths and monsters, her fickle nature is taken in stride by her clanmates. Outsiders don't seem to find it as endearing, however. Though it may also be the fact that something is off with Anathema that disturbs them. It may be the shadows that surround her and seem to move out of sync with her steps, or the smile that's a bit too sharp, or the feeling of being watched even though she's not even facing them. Regardless, most dragons not used to her tend to find themselves a bit uncomfortable in her presence.

H I S T O R Y - - - - - -
The shadows were deep and dark on the night of her hatching, and they were the only thing to hold her as she came into awareness all alone. She knew neither her parents' names nor her own, but she had no need for either at that time. Instead she focused on the writhing darkness surrounding her. Its call and her own curiosity drew her deeper within the Tangled Wood until even the moon was swallowed by the night. She wasn't afraid as the shadows swelled and covered her too; she laughed and bounced as if it were all a game, knowing they would do her no harm. From that moment on, her home was the depths of Foxfire Bramble.

As the small Guardian grew, she learned that she was a bit different from others of her kind. The rare times she encountered other dragons, most of them didn't seem to have the shadows she did. Hers seemed to be almost alive and yet an extension of herself. Despite this, she only realized exactly how strange she is was the one time she was able to play with those her own age. She had been wandering around her regular haunts when a group of rowdy hatchlings stumbled upon her. They immediately asked if she would play with them, and she, of course, agreed. Everything was fine for a while; she had fun 'hunting' with the others, chasing leaves and bugs tthat were too quick for them to catch.

Then she, quite literally, stumbled upon a venomous snake.

Almost immediately, the shadows clung to her and struck out at the threat. It stood little chance against the razor-sharp limbs the darkness had formed, and the Guardian hatchling looked at the new development in awe. The new appendages relaxed as soon as the snake was dead, and she tried to move them. The delight she felt at doing so successfully was soon overshadowed by the fear on her playmates' faces, though. The others fled when she tried to come closer, despite some of them seeming regretful while doing so. All she could do was stare after them. She couldn't understand why they were scared, but she decided that she would be just fine on her own.

(She ruthlessly ignored the part of her that was hurt by the others' reactions.)

As the years passed and that day became no more than a distant memory to her, the now adult Guardian wandered the Tangled Woods until she found her Charge in an abandoned sanctuary. It seemed to be a ruin from the Second Age, and the caverns beneath it held and protected sculptures and statuettes from that time. The sight of the numerous pieces of art made something in her purr in satisfaction. From that day on, she claimed the lands around the old ruins as hers and guarded her territory fiercely. Any that came too close to the sanctuary during that time were met with snarls and lashing shadows as her instincts struggled to settle. Her self-control was shot, the abilities she worked so hard to master lashed out, and the lonely silence of the Crypt she had made her lair only made her temper worse. It was, honestly, a very volatile time in her life, and she hated not being in complete control of herself.

It was during this time period that she met Sylvus.

He was a strange little thing- that she could tell almost immediately. The Fae had stumbled upon the ruins and started poking around, gaining her ire. Yet he seemed fearless in the face of her anger; he simply tilted his head and asked if he could poke the shadowy limb threatening him. It confused her enough to drag her from her rage, and she found herself intrigued. After that, he never really left. The strange Fae who called himself Sylvus somehow slipped into her life. At least he was amusing; that was certainly enough to slowly endear him to the Guardian. Maybe the fact that he gave her a name also had to do with it, but she kept that to herself. A name was just a name; no need to get so emotional over a silly little detail. Yes, his interesting nature is why she kept him around and allowed him to bring others home with him. Perhaps she grew attached to those he brought as well, but she'd never tell.

(She was so very good at denial, after all.)

Having settled into her role as a clan leader, Anathema is dedicated to protecting and leading her clan. She recently named the ruins that serve as the main lair the 'Abyssal Sanctum', and the old sanctuary has been cleaned up to better house the numerous 'dragons' that call it home. Anathema still says her first priority is her own entertainment, but it's more of a habit than anything. Of course, she still makes sure to find interesting things to hold her attention, but those under her protection know they are her main concern. She makes a good leader, for all her faults, and the others in the clan are happy to have her as the Sovereign of the Abyssal Sanctum. Her near fanatical devotion to the Shadowbinder can be a bit much sometimes, though.

N O T E S & T R I V I A

Had no name until Sylvus came; they found the word 'anathema' in one of the damaged books that filled the Crypt and Sylvus asked if she'd like to be called 'Ana'. She liked it, but decided to take on the whole word, with Sylvus the only one allowed to use the shorter version.

She tried to give Nameless an actual name but it just laughed and called her silly. She avoids using the clan's nickname in respect of its wishes (though privately calls it 'You/It Who Is Mine' since it calls itself 'We Who Are Yours/Hers').

Rarely bares her teeth (even in a grin) unless annoyed or angry, which led to most of the clan following her example and it becoming a sort of law. Takes that sort of thing as disrespectful and a potential threat nowadays due to that.

Loves her familiar almost as much as she does Sylvus, and actually collects Nerae's shed fur. May or may not plan to make a nest out of fluff-stuffed pillows and blankets once she finds someone to make them.

Loves Sylvus dearly and would kill everyone in the room and then herself if something happened to him. Somewhat possessive of him and acts like a sulky cat if he doesn't pay her enough attention. Does encourage him to make connections since being social and making friends makes him happy, though.

Like 90% of Sylvus' impulse control, while he's 90% of hers.

Actually has a disturbing amount of eyes, though they're usually closed and hidden. If she was fully a dragon at one point she's likely not by now.

Really does care for her clan, in her own selfish way, and would fight tooth and nail to protect them. Would rather tear herself to pieces than see them hurt. Would also rather do that than admit it, though.

Full of hubris. Likes attention and praise and will preen like a peacock if you say anything positive about her or hers. A total show pony who likes dramatics when in a good mood and her way of speaking reflects this unless she gets excited or uncomfortable. (Starts speaking very stiffly if uncomfortable, and becomes more informal when excited.)

Talks a lot for someone who says they dislike most others. Actually pretty chatty and will ramble if on a topic she loves, like gardening/plants.

Her movements are slightly disconcerting though it's hard to pinpoint why. She also forgets to blink sometimes and usually keeps a closed-mouth smile on her face most of the time.

Will hoard nearly anything, especially if it's pretty and/or glittery. Blue and purple things are her favorites, and blue has officially become 'her color'.

Her personal room is full of trinkets and things, though surprisingly well-organized. Each thing has a place and she doesn't like them being moved by anyone but herself. There's also a corner dedicated solely to her 'nest', filled with soft things and stuffed creatures. She likes to sleep curled up with Nameless and/or Sylvus there. She also has a smaller nest nearby for her familiar, who mostly stays in her room but is free to roam as he pleases.
