B I O G R A P H Y
The others who were in the cave with him hadn’t been much help. The first, who referred to herself as The Unusual, went about, whispering conspiracy theories of her old clan to herself, and occasionally shouting things about “the mockery of the usurpers” and “the chosen one”. Edge found her absolutely mad. Then there was the hatchling. He didn’t know her name. She was a quiet thing, and he had an odd urge to protect her from The Unusual. He didn’t trust that dragon, with her strange stories and her wild eyes. It seemed as though she was watching them all constantly. But even with her many eyes, she could not see who had trapped them there, nor who had been bringing them food every day. That wasn’t Edge’s biggest concern, but The Unusual raved about it for hours after the food was delivered each day. Edge wanted out. He wanted to return to the surface and fight again in the coliseum as he was born to do. He wanted to feel the fear of his enemies as he destroyed them, and he wanted to see the respect of his clanmates as he returned victorious every day from the coliseum. After The Incident however, he wasn’t sure if his clan would still welcome him with the same level of respect as before. There had always been rumours of what he had been doing, of course, but no one could ever get any proof. After all, no one would investigate that thoroughly if a prisoner disappeared. That was what Edge had counted on for many years as he had killed time and time again those would certainly have destroyed his clan if they had been allowed to live. Then a nosy young guard had caught him at it, and ran straight to the clan leader. Edge couldn’t remember much after that. He remembered muffled voices as he waited outside of the chamber, the creak of the old doors as they swung open, and the look of betrayal in the eyes of the leader. Edge couldn’t remember any more than the eyes, not even his old leader’s name. He stalked out of the room, humiliated and furious. Furious at the guard, for betraying him, and furious at his leader, for not realizing what a favor he had been doing for the clan by getting rid of those dangerous criminals. Edge had taken to the skies, not paying any particular attention to where he was going, when a storm began forming around him. At first he hadn’t paid it much mind, but he soon realized that it would be a harsh storm and that he was too far away from his clan to make it back to shelter in time. He lost consciousness shortly after the first bolts of lightning flashed around him, only to reawaken in that godforsaken cave. He had been attempting to dig his way out of the cave, so far with little luck and even less assistance from the other two. The Unusual was occupying herself by murmuring more of her crazy mumbo-jumbo, and the hatchling was off to one side, watching the two of them. Edge growled in frustration as he raked his claws against the rocky walls. A sprinkle of dust and pebbles fell away, but the majority of the wall was solid rock, impossible to dig through. If he was hoping for some sort of reaction from the other two, he was very much disappointed. The hatchling barely batted an eye, and The Unusual simply whispered, “My eggs, my eggs, gone, like the chosen one.” “Will you quit whining?” snapped Edge, “If you’d help me try to get out of here, maybe you could do something about your precious eggs.” The Unusual looked up at him through her many eyes. “Too late.” she hissed, “I’ve been betrayed.” “Well so have I.” snapped Edge, “And I’m still trying to get out of here.” The Unusual didn’t answer him this time, but went back to staring around at the walls and ceiling, as though a way out was just going to appear. Edge snarled and turned back to the wall. Useless. They were all useless, even him. He couldn’t do anything in this body, buried all the way down here. He wanted to get out, to fight, to defend, and to do whatever he had to to protect his clan. But there was a thought, darting around in the back of his mind, a thought that he very much tried to avoid. The thought that perhaps he deserved this, for now he felt as helpless as he had made those that he had killed feel. Maybe this would be his eternity, as death would be theirs. |
