How many masters he'd gone through now, he didn't know, wandering from one to the next. At this point, there were too many to count. Many had died of illnesses he bred within himself - not his fault, but he blamed himself for most. Others disappeared. A few dismissed him after growing bored with him. He was born to serve, to spread contagion at the order of whomever he chose as his master, to stand between them and danger, to protect and to pronounce their word. He knew this. Or at least, he thought he did. Really, he wasn't so sure anymore what he was born to do, stricken with a lack of purpose, lost in so many ways. The last one... They abandoned him. Cast him off as if he were naught but dust in the wind, and, as far as he knew, they were right in that judgement. In that moment of weakness, he found an occupation in sharing news between allied clans in the area, trivial things really, and not only did it give him some purpose, he was getting paid for it as well. Suddenly, he had access to some of the nicer things of life without some authority to ask permission from. He wondered why he ever chose to serve in the first place, why he sought it out. With the meager funds he had, he bought from the locals what he needed, small trinkets, food, tools for certain menial tasks he occasionally came across, favors in exchange for necessities, and finally, he understood why he sought it so. He'd only ever done it wrong. He was "born to serve", sure, but it was the friends he could make that he was meant to work alongside, not some high and mighty master who shackled him and forced him to do all their biddings. It was never meant to be one sided, his truest self-defined purpose laid silently waiting in the building up of both he and his fellows, a harmony in light of the old life he now readily abandoned. While he still made some of his new friends ill on the occasion, it was never near as bad, as he was happy, and the toxins in his lungs faded away more and more with every day passed, his strength returning with his joy and his frailty disappearing, and finally, after years of ailment, Epoch was healthy, ready to take on a world he had always longed to meet, be it through song, or through dance, or through a small, simple task. |
