The Incomplete Tactician

___ The second in a set of triplets, Avarin is a masterful advisor and tactician, as diligent and resourceful as he is deceptive and dubious. ___ Avarin can make the most of any situation, with any materials, with any limitation. No spot is too tight, no wall or corner is truly a dead end. There is always a way forward. And with a little flash of blinding light, or the right gas contained in a flask, he could easily make the dead end into what his opponent is backed up against. ___ That being said, while he is a masterful tactician, his loyalties lie only in himself, and perhaps in his bloodline. There is little he values, little he truly cares for yet, so there's nothing to hold against him as insurance. There is only his word to go on, and while his plans always work, they may not be fully shown. At any moment, Avarin could turn. He could have plans in the darkness, plans hidden from his commander, his truer ally not the one he was seemingly serving under. ___ In this, Avarin has been the end of quite a few, those whom he deemed callous and cruel, bent and twisted to darkness by greed. Those few employers he tired of, the ones he resented, the ones he despised. ___ He would always be their end, if they who changed and morphed trusted him as they always did. ___ Thanks to his elder brother, Avarin, who was born with naturally broken and disabled magical circuitry, can now utilize the gifts he should have had from birth, had he not been born with defective circuits. His brother fixed it all, during the last time with all three together before parting ways. Where he still relies on his body to get things done, he cannot deny the power as a more viable option in defending himself, and yet... ___ And yet, he still does not use it. From his beginning, Avarin was training his body to survive in a world he believed was certainly full of mages ready to rip his flesh from bone and sew it back together the next morning. The way he once saw it, if he was fast enough, he could avoid any spell cast. ___ Now he knows, he was oh so wrong. Even he could miscalculate, though he would never make those miscalculations again. ___ Thanks to his brother's early tampering, Avarin survived that which should have killed him, a trap left by a conjurer who did not trust the turncoat who betrayed his employer - the enemy. Instead of taking his life, the blast merely destroyed the magical circuitry in his right arm as the mana came flooding out to protect him, rendering it the only part of him unable to sustain -(much less control)- the flow of mana that his brother had established as a child. ___ It was no matter, considering that, for him, a body with no functioning circuitry was normal. For him, he lost nothing. An arm was nothing compared to a whole body changed to support what he was born without. ___ He learned. He now has his countermeasures for even that situation, should it occur again. Avarin adapted, changed, prepared. What hole in his defenses there was before, there was no longer. Like the legend of Achilles's heel, Avarin is almost impenetrable, but surely, another weakness lies somewhere, incredibly safeguarded. ___ Avarin was and is always going to have the upper hand in his war, regardless of whether or not he has magic on his side. |
