"Leather is definitely not flattering on you. Perhaps we should try silk instead..." "Skilled in garment-making, this dragon can cut, stitch, mend, and alter pieces to best flatter their wearer. He can also do the same tasks to make sure the garment is the most unflattering piece in that dragon's wardrobe. Be careful, because as he is known for being a devoted spouse, he is also known for being quite spiteful to those who wronged him. A few intentionally misaltered pieces are well within in his repertoire of revenge." - ixris Achieving mastery over his chosen craft at a precocious age, Yew desired to stretch his abilities in a new location. Several other younglings in his clan had migrated to the island of Prufrock in the Starfall Isles, and Yew followed in their footsteps, thinking to use their connections to make a start in a new place. He quickly grew exasperated by his new clan's lack of fashion sense. Most of them eschewed clothing altogether, favoring jewelry or a few accessories. There was always a ready market for his apparel in other clans, however, so he insisted the clan's dragons build him a workshop and storefront in Lantern Port, then Yew fell hard and fast for the beautiful Yvette, and he crafted his most exquisite clothing for her. He is less fond of her brother Jinx and thinks him somewhat ridiculous and delusional, but at Yvette's urging, he made the coatl some fashionable attire that could cover the wings he considered "cursed." The snapper Sentis proved to be his most difficult challenge, as her predilection for becoming spiny whenever something frightened her meant that any fine clothing was quickly shredded and ruined. Yew was horrified by the ugly leather vest she had resorted to wearing and was determined to make her something more fitting. He and Winternight worked closely with Winter's mage mate Ez to reinforce a beautiful silk dress so that it would be able to withstand her condition, and he considers that dress the absolute triumph of his career to date. When word reached Lantern Port of their mother Shula's demise and their father's subsequent departure from Oakrest, their sons were devastated, both by the thought of never again seeing their mother's face and the loss of the familial tethers that bound them to their birthplace. They felt uprooted and adrift, a bit regretful that they had been so focused on building up their shop that they hadn't taken the time to visit their parents, though Ember at least had the excuse of being too ill to easily travel. Yew cynically chided himself that he had no such excuse, save for being young and not realizing that time changes all things, takes away loved ones and scatters them to the winds. The Stitchery was closed for a period of mourning while a memorial tapestry was made. It was largely the work of Yew and Ember, who knew their mother best, but Eugene, who had trained under Brightwork, wove the cloth that Ember dyed, and Winternight, at the time the only member of the shop not from Oakrest, helped Yew with the stitching and resolved himself to learn from their experience and strengthen his own ties with his remaining family. Each of them poured themselves into their work - the narratives of their birthplace and the dragons who had lived there and who live there still, the stories woven into each of their hearts, the skills sewn into their claws, and the regret caused by the dangling threads of tales that will never be completed. When the tapestry was finished, it was hung behind the shop's counter so that it could watch over that which Shula and Brightwork's legacy had built. Many of the store's patrons have commented on its beauty and inquired as to purchasing it, but the dragons who made it find that no price can be placed on memory and refuse to part with it, no matter the sum offered. |
