Guardian of Ice

8a6TOhn.gif 		They say that in the Southern Icefields, there are dragons who stand by lakes, watching over those who dare to tread on the thin ice. These stories are meant to be myths, but sometimes, if you look hard enough, you will catch a glimpse of what looks like a dragon, gliding across the surface of the lake, impervious to the freezing waters.
Such stories are told to hatchlings to help them sleep, but some know of the Protectors: dragons selected by the Icewarden himself to guide dragons in his stead.

Rila was born a Protector, her white flecked body showing her ancestry. Her extended family lived together in a hidden cave in the Fortress of Ends, happily playing in the cold. Her kind are resistant to cold, so surviving in the freezing landscape was a breeze. The only rule was to remain unseen by the other dragon clans. Protectors have a near mythical status, and must never be found lest someone harness their extreme talent for Ice magic. The Icewarden himself protected the clan on occasion, not letting the guardians of his land to come to any harm.

Rila grew into an extremely talented Protector, and did her job with pride. She stood atop an ice pedestal beside the lake, posing as an ice sculpture and watching as dragons would brave the frigid ice to cross the floes. One fateful day, a Tundra tried to cross, her clumsiness indicating she was not from the Icefields. As soon as she slipped in, Rila sprang to action. Flying as gracefully as a swan, she rescued the spluttering Tundra from an Icy fate. As she was about to walk away, the Tundra extended a claw. She said her name was Belle and that she was looking for a representative from the Ice Flight to come with her. After making the necessary arrangements she set off, eager to see the world.

Belle had placed Rila in charge of the clan's extensive library, letting her study the world around her. She fell in love with the job instantly, being able to organise things and tell the youngsters exactly where to find a book really suited her. She was honoured that there was a legend about her, and frequently tells it to whoever listens. One day, a Tundra stopped by the library, one that looked like the snowfalls of home. He had spotted her too and was quick to get talking with her, introducing himself as Icicle. He visited the library every day from then on, offering her flowers and treasures to try and win her heart. She, however, was unaffected until he brought her a Snowdrop from her home. Touched by this gesture, she paid notice and soon saw what a beautiful dragon he was, inside and out. She now lives happily in the clan, but one can never forget one's roots. When they need it, her family calls her back to watch over the lake. She has two homes now, and two families, and just as happy in either.
