A New Life
by @Paintminion 5/2017

The weather was miserable, a humid dampness in the air that was oppressive as the fading light spilled shadows along the road and beneath the trees of the sparse forest I trudged through. I had a vague hope that it led to a place where I could find shelter like a barn or a shed, maybe an old cave. I ached so badly in my wings and shoulders that I had finally taken to the ground, and now, with each step, my claws shot pain up my legs and arms.

I sniffled, ignoring the fact that I was crying. I focused as much energy as I could muster to once again shove thoughts of my past from my mind and take one more step, and another. I had lost all track of where I was and did it even matter as I didn’t have a destination? As the rain began, I stopped, raised my maw to the sky and keened as the tears mixed with raindrops. Pain engulfed me and I collapsed. I became a huddled heap in the middle of the road. I could not bother to find a sheltering tree or anything, this is where the gods had left me, utterly and completely alone.

“Excuse me, but you look like you could use some help? Maybe a place to stay and a good hot meal? Are you injured?” asked a small voice near my head.

I slowly raised my wing and looked out to see a male shadowdancer with wings an orange the color of molten sunsets. I blinked at him, barely registering he had asked his question a second time as I stared mutely. What could I tell him? Instead I nodded, yes. Was he real? His smile spread across his face, a beautiful sight that made me ache in my chest.

He motioned me to follow. I whimpered as I gingerly put weight on my feet, and hobbled behind him. He came back to give me a hand, but I shied from his claws as they reached for my shoulder. I could not help it. He simply nodded and offered me encouragement as I walked.

“Come in come in! Turi?” The male hollered as we came inside the lair, “We need something hot to eat quick, and send for a healer and some blankets!” I could barely register scrambling from a few different dragons, and admitted to myself that yes, a blanket or two would be nice, I felt so cold. I did notice the oppressive humidity was less, and a female came towards me with towels and I flinched. She talked softly and I relaxed a bit more, telling my tired brain over and over that these people meant me no harm.

Soon I was warm and Turi brought a good hearty soup for me. I was given space, and I slurped that soup down so fast, the cook didn’t get more than a couple steps away.

“Please, that was delicious soup. May I have more. Chef?” I said quietly, though my voice was a bit hoarse.

Turi whirled around with a fown, “I am not a chef, I am the lair repair dragon. But it’s my night to cook, so just call me Turi. I’ll get you more soup and maybe some cornbread to go with it. You need some meat on those bones.”

I had my fill of soup, a healer came and led me to a sleeping chamber, and I was soon snuggled in and told to sleep in peace, just to call out if I needed anything and the nightwatch would listen for me.

I humbly realized that I probably owed this lair my life. They had welcomed me, cared for my injuries, my belly was full for the first time in ages, and although I had to once again shy away from my memories of the past, I replaced them with a firm memory of that soup. That glorious warm soup.

###

In the morning, I found my way back to the kitchen in hopes of doing the dishes or something to repay the lair for feeding me. Then I would be on my way.

The kitchen was a bit of a mess and I set to making it tidy as I looked around for something I could cook for breakfast. Eggs and sausages, a nice batch of biscuits maybe? I began by making biscuits - they would keep for a bit if not eaten and went with many meals. Someone would eat them, especially as I made a decent batch of biscuits! I was elbow deep in kneading the dough, when I realized I had an audience sitting at the tables behind me.

“What’s up, Buttercup?” Turi said as he stood next to me, inspecting my work with a raised brow.

I was startled by the name he called me. “Did you know my name means “Buttercup”?”

“Well then, someone named you well! You are the colors of a nice buttercup. They also taught you well. Looks like some mighty fine biscuits dough there. Did you find the rolling pin? Can I help? I need to work off some bad vibes. The pipes sprung another leak late last night and I am grumpy today. Cooking calms me down and sets me right.”

“It calms me down too, and I wanted to thank everyone for helping me yesterday. Please, show me around your kitchen! Where are the pans? The jams and jellies?”

“I’ll get those things, right here, see? And the jam’’s in the cold box here.”

“Thank you Turi. What else do people like for breakfast here?”

“They will eat anything we put in front of them and like it. Or else!” and he turned towards the tables where people were patiently waiting and watching.

“So why don’t you have a designated chef here?” I asked him, as it seemed unusual for an established Lair.

“No one here really likes cooking all that much, except me, and I am needed and enjoy being a repair dragon much more than a chef.” He gave a big sigh. “But food has to be made or some might just starve around here.”

“Then let’s really cook and give them something special today, I want to do that and show my thanks. Give me a hand?” Turi smiled and nodded, seems he wasn’t so grumpy already.

We made sausage gravy, some hominy grits, fried and scrambled eggs, and a fruit salad. I also did a quick onion and peppers quiche, knowing the leftovers could be brought out for lunch, too. Turi worked out his aggressions on some hash browns. He was marvelous in the kitchen, but when the oven door had an issue, he went back to repair dragon and I worked around him. I giggled at his occasional words directed at the stubborn hinge, and I let him taste everything, as much to have him stay involved, as to find out if I was doing the spices correctly for the folks here. He told me jokes as we both worked, and all I could think was how this was the best day of my life. I had not laughed like this in...ever?

When we laid out the breakfast buffet, everyone clapped and smiled. It was an incredible feeling of warmth and appreciation I had never felt before. I cried and wasn’t even self-conscious about it. Turi and I finally sat down as others volunteered to clean up, and we had our own breakfast.

“Buttercup, I don’t mean to pry, but are you okay? What are you running from?” Turi looked me in the eye over his cup of caf.

I didn’t know what to say, but I owed him some sort of truth.

“For awhile here, I have not had to think about what’s behind me. I won’t speak of it, Turi, it’s not pleasant and would only ruin our breakfast, but your welcome has been incredible to me.”

“I can respect that, Buttercup, but know we’re here if you need help at all. We’re friends, you can trust us.”

He was so sincere, hope bubbled up. “I would like to stay, if you will have me?”

“Anyone that gets up that early to make biscuits is okay in my book!” Turi waved Flight over and we talked for a few minutes, but it was heartwarming to see in their faces the trust and the friendliness. I hadn’t seen that in a long long time, or felt so safe.

“What says the lair? Shall we accept Ranunculus into our lair?” called Flight loudly to the room. He was answered by much hooting and hollering and some raising a biscuit in agreement.

It was the happiest day of my life, and each day I went on to make new friends and learn new recipes and found a home, a position, and love...eventually.

That time in my life was a huge lesson I learned, though I truly wish I had known it earlier. Now I try to pass along some words of wisdom to the young ones leaving to make their own way in the world - “Find friends that love what you love, and don’t make you do what you hate."
