A (sort of) lost Fae, Prestor hails from the Light flight, but eventually lost a bet and was supposedly "forced" to live in the domain of Shadow. His laughing eyes and impish nature are well-suited to his new home, though his misadventures have made him jaded and bitter. He complains of the unnatural forces that hold him to his lair, but really, the only things keeping him in the Tangled Wood are his arrogance and foolishness. (Or are they?)

He's doing as best as he can in his situation.

"Um, hello? I'm the trickster here, and I think you're lying. (I also think that you're a pretentious trash bag, but who's keeping score?)"

As most stories do, his began with a warning.

"You're a Light dragon," his mother said, flat and monotonous as ever, fins flicking irritably. "You do not venture near the Tangled Wood, and you will keep to the Sunbeam Ruins. I don't trust those Shadow dragons."

He laughed then, brushed off the advice. He never, ever went out that far! Besides, he was a smart little dragon, he knew what to do. It's just that, you see, he liked to prank people! And everyone knew the best pranksters came from the Wood, so could he pretty please -

"No," his mother said again. "I did not move here for no reason. I am aware that the pranksters are in the Wood, and that I make my living by those means, but I refuse for you to make my mistakes. You will be a scholar. Do you hear me?"

Fine, fine.

He took off, wings flapping lazily in the summer breeze. That was definitely a perk of living in this particular area - no matter how cold the season was, there was always light. Sure, most dragons in the flight wasted it by staying inside and writing all day, but there was enough to see and mess around in! Soaring towards the Sundial, he flew a perfect corkscrew, making sure everyone (including that nice Spiral from a few lairs away, hoo boy) could see the absolutely stunning technique that he strove to exemplify in every action that he made. See, Prestor wasn’t just a perfectionist, he was an arrogant one, and in the end that was what led to his downfall. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

If nothing else, he was true to his word, and he never failed in straying from the Sundial. When at last the sun began to set, he flew back homewards, with the same lazy demeanor. Nothing interesting ever happened here, but maybe that was a good thing. It just meant he’d have to try harder to impress the dragons around him with his petty magic tricks and spells. Maybe he’d actually have to go into combat training. Yeah. That’d kind of suck.

As he rounded the familiar turns to his lair, he paused for a moment at the door. Inside this cave, he knew, was the same dragons he’d ever see for the rest of his life. Wasn’t that a bit dull? He thought it was a bit dull. Because in the short term, it might be fun to stick around, but in the long term? No, no, no. That’d just be so boring. He had to see the world at some point, right?

Come to think of it, he said he wouldn’t go to the Wood, but he never said he wouldn’t go near it. And, after all, Prestor was a dragon of his word. He wouldn’t even be gone for long, he’d be back in an hour at the most. Of course!

With that, he turned from the lair and flew eastward, euphoric.

He’d finally done it, the sly scoundrel! He’d found a loophole yet stuck to his word! His self-congratulatory internal spiel came to a halt as he spotted a strangely luminescent cloud of purple smoke convulsing on the ground below. Every instinct screamed at him to leave it be, but curiosity pulled at him. Anyway, he wasn’t too far from the lair. He could just hightail it back if things got bad. With another one of his signature flips, he dove towards the cloud, landing straight in the middle of it.

Wisps of smoke curled away from the area, fading through his wings. To his surprise, a pearl-less Pearlcatcher holding a deck of glowing purple cards dragged itself through the smoke to clutch at his claws, bloodshot eyes haggard and begging.

“Please,” he rasped. Prestor tried to pull away, but the smoke tangled through his limbs, holding him fast as the Pearlcatcher made his plea. “Won’t you play a game with me? A game of cards?”

“Um, actually, that sounds bad…” Prestor gulped, the Pearlcatcher’s image seeming to warp in the uncertain light.

“It’s simple, it’s simple!” the Pearlcatcher cried, beseeching. “Just a game of Higher or Lower! Win, and I’ll leave you be! Lose, and you’ll go on the greatest adventure of your life! Please, just play with me!”

He didn’t even hesitate. “What’s the first card?” The Pearlcatcher wilted in relief, dealing out a pair of cards. Unbeknownst to the pair, the smoke became more tangible, fencing the two into their penultimate duel of luck. The Pearlcatcher flipped one over, holding it to Prestor’s eyes.

“Twelve.”

“Are you kidding me?” Prestor laughed in astonishment. “Lower, I can’t even believe -“

“Higher, it’s higher!” Shrieking triumphantly, the Pearlcatcher flipped over the other card to reveal the number 13 printed in glittering silver on the back. “I’m free! After so long, I’m FREE!”

“Whoa there, no need to get so excited,” Prestor said, laughing nervously and pretending to ignore the way that the smog around the two seemed to travel closer to him, swirling around him almost possessively. The Pearlcatcher’s eyes danced with an insane light, and poor Prestor began to seriously regret every decision he’d ever made up to that point today.

“Oh, but there is, you arrogant fool! I’m finally free of my curse!” Pointing a crooked claw at Prestor, he cackled. “It physically pained me to come here, you see! Years of being trapped in the Tangled Wood! YEARS!” His cards began to fly out of his claws of their own volition, surrounding the Fae.

Blinking anxiously, Prestor stared back at the cards, their runes and numbers shifting as the Pearlcatcher spoke. Was it just him, or were they shifting ever faster as the Pearlcatcher raved? “I don’t get it - what?”

“That’s the cards’ curse! You’re forced to stay in the Tangled Wood, and you’ll lose your mind if you venture out! The only way you can get out is by winning a game of Higher and Lower with some fool who’s ignorant enough to bet lower with a suspicious card-bearing dragon!” The Pearlcatcher grinned, watching Prestor’s expression. “You’ll be stuck with my fate, and now I’m free! Farewell, idiot!”

With that, the cards’ runes and numbers came to a stuttering halt before flashing a bright white. All Prestor saw before shutting his eyes tight was a circle of Shadow runes encasing him, smoke swirling between the cards.
