Biography

Sootshadow
Explorer

Clever and curious, Sootshadow (known as Shadow) was trained by his mothers to hunt monsters. Drawn to unexplored mysteries and to anything involving tunnels and secret passageways, he is known to disappear for days on end only to reemerge through a hidden door, covered in dust but otherwise unharmed. Some say he is merely lucky, but those who know him best say that his skills are hard won and honed through practical application.

History and Stories

Though frequently berated by his mothers for disappearing to explore some out of the way (and usually dangerous) corner of his home clan, he had mastered the training they had given them and returned from each outing unscathed. Sootshadow soon felt that there was nothing new for him to discover in the land of his birth, though - nothing that some other dragon hadn't uncovered or deciphered first - and longed for a new challenge.

That opportunity came when a coatl named Eztli visited the clan, bringing letters from his elder siblings and some of the other dragons who had migrated to the coatl's island in the Starfall Isles. After Ez assured the young coatl that there were relics and puzzles and unexplored places aplenty on the island of Prufrock, Shadow decided to journey there with him, bidding farewell to his mothers setting off across Dragonhome.

At one of the inns they stayed at overnight, the two traveling coatl encountered a pack of mirrors who claimed that Ez had stolen something from them and ordered a coatl with a sword, Indil, to kill him. Ez gently shoved a confused Shadow back into the crowd before using magic to fend off his attacker, meanwhile calling out to the other dragon and telling him of the deceptiveness of the mirrors. Indil finally came to the realization that the mirrors had long been lying to him and ceased his attacks before turning with Ez to face the mirrors, who fled rather than face the wrath of two angry coatl. Thanks to their evidence, the local authorities were able to round them up, convict them of their crimes, and imprison them, and Eztli and Shadow continued the rest of their journey in peace - probably thanks to the added presence of Indil, whose sword and guise made him quite the intimidating figure.

Once on the island, Shadow was pleased to connect with his elder siblings and other dragons who had been born in his native clan. They helped him adjust to life in the Starfall Isles, to an insane amount of magic charging the atmosphere and to living among spirits who took the form of dragons. He was quick to explore his new home, and with some wiggling and squeezing, he managed to fit himself into a small opening in the basement of the library that led into a tunnel system. He was gone for days, much to the concern of many of the clan's dragons who weren't aware of his predilections or his talents, but search parties proved futile until Shadow emerged unharmed from the mouth of Michelangelo's Cave. Further explorations uncovered other tunnels leading beneath the shallow sea that separated the island of Prufrock from Lazarus Rock. Shadow also found one that used to connect the island to the mainland, though it is currently blocked. He continues to pester the clan founder and resident geomancer Emrys into going into the tunnels with him and clearing the obstacle, but Emrys (aside from not being keen to venture into tunnels that run under the ocean) worries that one wrong move might destabilize the entire island.

Though at an impasse on that route, Shadow has found plenty to unearth and catalog in the tunnels he currently has access to - strange artifacts that are either of a bygone age or perhaps not of this world but instead belonging to the spirit realm. Due to the thinning boundary between the worlds, he sometimes encounters hostile entities seeking to entrap him, but his quick wits and cleverness always enable him to outsmart them.

Though he has found many curiosities in the tunnels during his explorations, he never expected to encounter a long-lost dragon. Shadow was exploring a side tunnel when one of the imbued charms his exorcist sister made him wear alerted him to a magical anomaly in the wall, near the skeletal remains of what once may have been a coatl. Though not the strongest or most talented mage in the clan, Shadow excelled at puzzles, and after a careful study of the patterns of magic that lay over that section of the tunnel, he was able to dispel the enchantment's cornerstones so that the rest of it unraveled, revealing what had been hidden by the barrier as it slowly dissolved and dispersed, wisps of ancient magic crumbling into arcane dust.

When the dust settled, Shadow found himself staring into a small stone room, every surface of it hatched with clawed tally marks. It contained the oddly well preserved bodies of several dragons, though one of them, a purple coatl wearing a crown, bore no visible wounds and appeared to be breathing. He knew his mothers (and his siblings) would have berated him for rushing in; he had dispelled the trap, but there may have been others, and though the coatl seemed like a dragon, he could have been a spirit - or worse - in disguise, but instinct overruled judgment and he found himself crouching over the other, trying to determine if he was still among the living, if he could be saved.

It took a lot of effort to bring the coatl out of the tunnels, both because he was weak and dazed by his long bout of imprisonment and sensory deprivation and because Shadow's exorcist siblings and others of the clan's dragons were wary of allowing any potentially dangerous being out among the rest of the clan without being quarantined and inspected both magically and physically, especially so soon after the Barrier Breach had wrecked tragedy on the clan. Their seemingly endless investigations finally proved what Shadow already knew to be true - the being he had found was a coatl named Vespers - an admittedly very powerful and very old coatl, but an "ordinary" dragon all the same, not a malevolent spirit or other threat. Vespers had long ago ruled a clan on Prufrock, but he had been betrayed and imprisoned by a former mate, magically sealed away in the dark for centuries.

Shadow found himself falling into the role of guide, host, and interpreter for Vespers as the other coatl slowly integrated himself into the clan and the modern world. He helped the other mages dismantle the last remains of the spells on that horrible prison so that it could never again be used, and he assisted Vespers in finding a suitable location to bury his deceased clanmates, whose bodies had started to decay once the last of the spells had been removed. Vespers seemed reluctant to deal with the coatl bones in the corridor, but he allowed Shadow to prepare a grave for them apart from the others.

Previously, Shadow had only been intrigued by material and intellectual pursuits, by the mysteries of unknown locations and unread texts. He was surprised to find in himself a magnetic pull toward Vespers, a desire to ferret out all of the other coatl's secrets, to learn what his life had really been like and to help him heal from the wounds of his past. Vespers was frustratingly guarded in his expressions and his emotions, however, unwilling to trust, to let others get close. It took quite a lot of time for the older dragon to thaw even a little, but once he relented, Shadow delighted in his new relationship, even though his siblings are dismayed that he's dating something he found down in the tunnels and what would their mothers think.

Though Shadow has little interest in political pursuits, he feels that helping to lead the clan will be instrumental to his mate's recovery, so he is as supportive as he can be to Vespers in his role as one of the triumvirate in charge of the island and the surrounding territory. Though he knows it's not a priority and that his mate likely despises the tunnels he was trapped in for so long, he still holds out hope that Vespers might use his new position of power to convince Emrys to unblock the tunnel that connects the island with the mainland.

Art and Lore

"This studious, observant dragon is watchful and attentive. He is routinely able to know the difference between his real comrades and things like doppelgangers. He has proven his cleverness with riddles and puzzles, and he makes an excellent delver into relics and abandoned places. He is known to disappear for days on end into old places in search of answers. That he routs monsters while he's there is merely a bonus." - ixris
