Biography
Vain | Tactless | Gaudy
There’s nothing in the world Carat hates more than the question, “Are you rich?”. C’mon, as if you couldn’t tell with just one glance. “No”, he would say, rolling his eyes, “I’m not rich, I’m filthy rich.”. As the son of one of the wealthiest jewelers in all of Sornieth, Carat was undeniably born with a silver spoon in his mouth. A gigantic lair, heaps of treasure, servants to do his bidding: he’d always had it all. Where most dragons would have to go out and find their own food, Carat only had to click his tongue and one of the family’s chefs would present him with the finest seafood dishes. Where others had to buy or even make their own clothes, the most expensive of apparel would already be stored in Carat’s many chests. And as the youngest of many siblings, he wasn’t even needed in his dad’s workshop, leaving the Coatl with even more time to delight in his riches. As expected of somebody with such an enormous fortune, Carat had an ego to match. Whenever he entered a room, his high-pitched voice and flamboyant walk made it sure that everyone inside was alerted of his presence. If he was there, you’d know. Turning heads was for Carat, after all, one of life’s biggest pleasures. And what was life for this Coatl but a never-ending pleasure cruise? But Carat’s hopes for more days of sweet idleness sank fast when the departure of one of his siblings left a spot for him behind the counter in the family’s jewel shop. “Quite an easy job, customer service”, his father said, “I’m sure you can manage”. Needless to say…no. No, he could not. The self-absorbed Coatl was without a doubt the least qualified dragon for that position. But before Carat could explain to that lovely Snapper lady just where exactly she could stick her emeralds, the Coatl’s father had already grabbed the boy by the neck and thrown him out of the shop. And that was it for Carat’s life of luxury. One minute you’re on top of the world, the next one you’re kicked out of your own home, forced to find another clan until, as his father worded it, “you learn how to act like a real dragon!”. Carat had never been this angry. A real dragon? I’ll show you one! His tantrum led him far away from home, looking for the perfect place to settle down. As he came across Darjeeling’s clan, Carat knew he had hit the jackpot. A bunch of colorful misfits all living under one roof? It was the perfect opportunity to prove his dad he could live like the common folk! Only one thing to do now: go say hi, as any normal dragon would. Easy, right? Carat strutted to where the group was and cleared his throat. They all stared at him. A smile crossed the face of the Coatl. “Boy, aren’t you lucky to have met me!”. |
