Biography
Jovial | Daring | Inquisitive
The air in the pub felt stale, swirls of smoke enveloping the few scattered clients like a layer of thick fog. It hung low, dancing and shifting under the dim overhead lamps, giving the bar even more of a depressing ambiance. Elliot didn’t mind. He wasn’t feeling much better, after all. Sitting at the counter, he downed the rest of his drink and sighed. His body still hurt from his last failed expedition, his wings all covered in bandages there where that unexpected Beastclan had had its way with him. And, to add insult to injury, he hadn’t uncovered anything. What kind of archaeologist was he? A poor one, to begin with. He’d left his clan long ago – those pompous scholars had never cared about his research -, but without financial aid, he knew he would not be able to go on any longer. ‘How about I buy you a drink?’ Elliot turned towards the voice. A dapper Spiral sat next to him, his monocle reflecting the light from the counter. The stranger signaled to the bartender, and in a flash two full glasses appeared before them. ‘Well, that’s the nicest thing that’s happened to me today’, Elliot said, grabbing the glass and taking a sip, ‘Might I ask for your name, or shall we leave that for the second date?’ The odd Spiral grinned, going for his own drink before answering. ‘I am, shall we say, a friend. A friend who’s looking for assistance, and I think you might just be the dragon for that’, he paused, staring deep into Elliot’s eyes, ‘My name is Diggory, and I have a proposition for you. What do you say?’ Elliot stayed in silence for a while, trying to read the mysterious dragon before him. Well, that was certainly unexpected. And a bit creepy. Images flashed in his mind, his imagination coming up with hundreds of scenarios for him, good, bad, and everything in between. He shrugged, eventually. It wasn’t as if he had that much to lose at that point. He leaned back in his chair. ‘I’m listening.’ -- Elliot finished his third drink, setting it down on the counter. He stared at Diggory, who was patiently waiting for his response. ‘Let me get this straight,’ he said, pointing at the Spiral with his glass, ‘You want to sponsor me, in all my travels and excavations. You’re gonna finance my work, no questions asked, no loopholes, anything, as long as I agree to your one condition?’ ‘That you take me with you on your journeys’, Diggory nodded, ‘I have asked many an explorer, but they have all refused my simple request. They don’t want that kind of responsibility resting on them.’ Elliot leaned closer, his face inches from the Spiral’s own. ‘You do understand that those explorations will be no game, right?’ ‘I am aware.’ ‘That it will involve lots of hard work?’ ‘I would expect so, yes.’ ‘That it will be dangerous?’ ‘I know.’ None of them moved, their eyes locked on each other’s, the sound of their breaths the only thing in their mind. And then, Elliot moved. He leaned back on his chair, turned to the bartender, and ordered another round. He raised his glass in the air, tilting it towards Diggory, and smirked. ‘Then let’s do it, partner.’ |
