Biography

| SEAGLASS | [♫] Calm Shallows
{ Sea Witch | He/Him | Gay, Poly }

Seaglass’ youth was spent in a small fishing village off the northwestern coast of the Southern Icefield. There, he was taught to control his considerable magical gifts, the cause of many a cataclysm, by his mentor, Jìng Gōngsūn, a Wind-born magic-worker of great skill and repute. Jìng was rare among dragonkind, for he could bend a number of different elements to his will, not merely his own—and Seaglass saw in him a drake of infinite potential, whose light outshone even the far-flung Beacon.

Under Jìng’s guidance, Seaglass grew into a talented sea witch. Yet, when the time came for him to seek his own path, away from his mentor, he hesitated. In his bones, there was a longing for the world, a wanderlust he could not sate; but in his heart, there was a desire for home and the drake who had shaped him into who and what he was.

He left the Southern Icefield, but only upon Jìng’s insistence.

However, once he was airborne, soaring over the lands of Sornieth, a weight was lifted from Seaglass. He made for the Continent and there spent many years observing, absorbing the cultures of the world. He learned of Shadow trickery, Arcane curiosity, and Water prophecy; he marveled at Lightning ingenuity, Earth longevity, and Nature humility. The colors, the sights, the sounds, all blended together into a tapestry so vibrant, it dazzled his young and inexperienced eyes, accustomed to seeing only stark white.

So when he arrived on the shores of the Sunbeam Ruins, he surprised even his own self by putting down roots. Initially, he thought to stay for a short while and continue his travels once he had had his fill of Feldspar lands—but as time wore on, he found more and more to love about the clan. Its founders had welcomed him graciously, despite his sordid past. Its residents were diverse and accommodating. Its territories were sprawling, encompassing grasslands, swamps and mires, and lofty mountain peaks—and, of course, the shoreline of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, to which a part of his heart would always belong.

In essence, it was all he had ever dreamed of and then somehow more.

Thus he settled and became the clan’s last line of defense. If ever they were to be overrun by dark and sinister forces, Seaglass would call upon the sea to flood the land and drag their enemies down into its murky depths. When once his magic had been used to harm, now it would be used to protect, as he had always wished it would be.

Alas, fate had something else in mind for Seaglass.

Nearly a cycle had passed, and he had begun to ache again with an all too familiar yearning. He had exchanged words with Jìng through letters, but had not seen his mentor since his departure from the Southern Icefield. In their time spent apart, he had come to accept that his love for Jìng was not merely that of a student for his teacher; he sought more from Jìng, and so his heart pined for what they had once had.

Emboldened by longing, Seaglass set out once more across the sea, to where Jìng awaited him on the docks of that old, rickety fishing village, which he remembered so fondly. They spent weeks together, reveling in one another, and it was decided then that Jìng would return to the Sunbeam Ruins with his pupil, for he could no longer bear for them to live so far apart.

Then, unexpectedly, a letter from Dreamweaver arrived, announcing their pregnancy with Phantasos. Seaglass knew his presence was needed, and Jìng assured that he would follow him soon, once his affairs in the Southern Icefield had been settled. They parted with a kiss, a seal of their love…

...and Jìng confronted the skulking rat, Atsushi, alone.

The nightmare’s plans began with Jìng, with Seaglass, and he would never see his lover alive again. Jìng’s body washed up along the shore mere days after Seaglass’ return to the territories. Seaglass found him in the square, where he had been laid before Dreamweaver as proof of a terrible treachery. Overcome with grief, Seaglass raised the sea from its bed and brought it crashing down upon the capital. Dreamweaver, still weak from labor, remained with him as the clan fled into the highlands, their shield of light all that stood between them and Seaglass’ wrath.

Lost in his memories, Seaglass was met with a phantom of his mentor, who urged him to master his emotions. Dreamweaver lay dying in his arms, and he could not protect them from himself while he remained trapped in the past. Reluctantly, he said his final goodbye to Jìng and shouted the sea back, until it was naught more than a distant roar on the horizon. His rage spent, he set about making amends as best he could, vowing again to serve the founders for as long as they would have him.

In the coming eons, he would learn of Atsushi’s deceit and forgive him for his involvement in the nightmare's schemes. They have grown close since then, doting upon one another as old friends—and as victims of the same dark design. Seaglass pines still for his mentor, the drake he loved more than the sea, but he has found peace by carrying on Jìng's lessons to a new generation: Emir, his ever diligent pupil. Jìng lives on in those lessons, or so he believes.
