“I’m the one who paid for it,
I survived but I payed for it”

Those who claim that the life of a royal is an easy one have not experienced the crushing weight of the crown. Not everyone is fit to be a leader, and even those who can carry its burden do so with a heavy heart. Kings and queens need to be strong – both physically and mentally – to maintain their position, or risk not only their people’s lives, but their very own.

Cashmere knew that better than anyone else. A princess herself, her one desire in life was to one day, after her beloved parents’ reign came to a peaceful end, inherit the throne. She knew ruling was no easy task, and so prepared herself accordingly. Extraordinarily gifted, she quickly became well-versed in matters of politics and economy. She also took an interest in war, learning from her parents’ best tacticians. Cashmere wanted to make sure that, when her time came to take over the throne, she would be ready.

But one can never be fully ready, and tragedy strikes without warning signs.

The attack was sudden, unexpected. There was no time to ask how those brutes had slid past the castle’s impenetrable defenses; they were there, and blood had already started to stain the immaculate floors of the palace. Cashmere struggled to find her bearings. A shrill scream resonated off the walls. More blood. Another scream. “The old King is dead!”. Blood there’s so much blood a scream her scream help help Cashmere CASHMERE.

The familiar voice pulled her out of her trance. Her maid was staring at her, eyes full of worry and fear. “Princess, you must leave at once”, the old Snapper begged, “You cannot stay here. Fly away, Cashmere, fly away and don’t look back”. Her tone was urgent. The sounds of broken glass echoed off the halls.

The Coatl could do nothing but stare back. Something was wrong. She was supposed to be a princess, supposed to stay and fight for her clan. Wasn’t that what she had been preparing for all of her life? And yet…she felt hopeless. Scared. In that moment, with Death whispering in her ear, Cashmere felt the full weight of the bloodied crown.

---

A figure flew away from the wretched castle. It flew and flew, past the boneyards and rotting landscapes of the Scarred Wasteland. When they landed, the skinny trees surrounding them in all directions, the fleeing dragon felt the last of their energy dissipate. They were exhausted. They curled up and folded their wings, searching for warmth. They did not find it.

---

The white Tundra peered at the strange dragon. It wasn’t unusual to find all sorts of lost drakes in the Starwood Strand, but something about that particular one made Darjeeling stop in his tracks. Something was off. The mage approached the dragon gingerly, not wanting to disturb them. As he got closer, he could see the Coatl’s outfit, expensive and elegant, but dirtied. The Coatl shifted, and she opened her eyes to look at him. Darjeeling spoke, his voice as sweet and caring as ever.

“Hello, are you alright? Can I help you?”

The Coatl stared. She remained that way for a few seconds, looking into the Tundra’s eyes. Then the tears started flowing. She cried noiselessly. Darjeeling got closer, but just enough. There was a story to be told there, but it was not the time for that. He smiled softly, a sad smile.

“I’m sorry. You are safe now. You’ll be ok”.
