Magical Shard

Shimmering Pinecone
Seirian was born to a secretive clan that was determined to keep itself safe by hiding from the world outside. Curiosity about what was out there pushed her to sign up as a scout- one of the brave few dragons willing to train as a fighter and strike out into the outside world to gather information. It would be her duty to travel for months at a time, collecting news and whatever secrets she could pry into, then return home alive and in one piece to tell the elders about what she had learned so they could best decide how to keep the clan hidden and safe.

It was a frightening idea, but exciting too. Seirian lay awake at nights imagining all sorts of adventures she might have, some good and some bad, until she was finally old enough to train and take up the scout's mantle.

After her first year long expedition, though, she reached a frustrating conclusion: it was their own neighbors in Shadow that were the most dangerous of all.

She had expected to uncover great packs of twisted Plague monsters that were biding their time to gather enough strength to attack the Tangled Wood, or bloodthirsty battalions of Light mage-warriors training to invade, or at the very least some kind of sinister prophecy that had bubbled up from the depths of the Tidelord's sea to predict a dire event that was waiting to fall on her homeland's head.

What she actually found was that very few outside of Shadow's own territory really cared about what went on inside the glowing walls of thorn. It was just the clever, tricky, conniving neighbors of her clan inside Shadow itself who were terrifying and worth defending against.

Nobody was very happy with this answer when she brought it home- the idea that the whole world was equally a threat was too firmly ingrained. Frustrated by the misunderstanding, and honestly too creeped out by the things she had seen Shadow magic being used for in the surrounding clans, Seirian decided she would rather strike out on her own, using the connections she had made on her first trip to help her start a career as a guide and traveling merchant.

She traveled by herself most of the time, only joining caravans when the land seemed particularly unsafe, until everything started to go strange during one of her visits to the Starfall Isles.

One of the mage colleges she would often sell her wares to started to go haywire, dozens of experiments and spells turning into dangerously overpowered versions of themselves all on the same day. It seemed to be happening to all the Arcane dragons... except for her friend Pip, who was suddenly acting very nervous and who had just recently worked a cosmetic spell on himself.

It didn't take her long to put together that her twitchy little friend was to blame. She insisted that he either come clean to everyone at the college or leave, for the sake of his fellow student's safety. And since he wanted to figure out what he had done on his own, rather than being treated like some kind of mystery project for everyone else to solve, Pip chose the second one.

Seirian keeps a wary eye on the world for both of their sakes. She's seen what corrupt or even simply careless people can do with powerful magic, and she has no intention of letting any person take advantage of her small, somewhat oblivious, academic friend. Her arm blades aren't worn just for looks, and she keeps them sharp.
