FISTS OF BURNING RAAGE

2bfMArI.png

"Momma, what's wrong with his eyes?" asked a small child, pointing blatantly at a young boy.
"Darling, that's not very-- whoa!" the child's mother took a step back in her surprise when she saw what had gained her little one's attention. Embarrassed and flustered, she made up some excuse and hurried herself and her child away from the odd boy.
This odd, young child's name was Shi Fei. His eyes had always been rather intense and buggy, and he had always had thick, dark eyebrows. He also never saw anything wrong with them. When people would look at him in surprise, horror, or disgust, he would just arch one of his giant eyebrows at them and give them a lopsided smile, wondering why they were all making such weird faces. In time, everyone in the small village got used to the strange-faced boy. He became just as dear to the other villagers as anyone else who lived among them, too. He always had so much energy, and he also developed grand aspirations. Ever since he was little, he loved to tussle with the other boys and the men of the village. There was always something special about Shi Fei. Many years passed, and Shi Fei would come and go for a while. He eventually settled back down at his old home. And then, one day...

"HyyyAAAAAAAGHH!"
With complete abandon, he threw himself at his foe, putting all of his strength into his charge. Bodies collided, and the fighter drew his arm back to send a powerful, rib-crushing jab into his opponent's torso.
"U-ng!"
He coughed, dizzy and helpless as he was tossed over his opponent's shoulder and tumbled across the dusty ring's floor. His foe had been quicker with his fist, shooting it into his stomach, forcing the air from his lungs. Now, all Shi Fei could do was cough, curled up on the ground, trying to regain his breath. As quickly as he could, he turned onto his belly, and slammed his palms onto the ground, signifying that there was still fight left in him. He wouldn't give up so easily. He could hardly feel the pain with his focus so fixed on his goal. He coughed and groaned again as he felt a sharp kick to his side, but he quickly rolled away from his opponent before getting back up as quickly as he could. Shi Fei refused to lose this match.
Now, he could clearly see his opponent coming towards him again. Shi Fei quickly ducked under his next swing and, fists lighting up with a sparking, blue aura, struck him as hard as he could in his diaphragm. The larger man coughed as he was sent flying backward, and tumbled out of the ring. Shi Fei was breathing heavily, and his fists were still clenched, but he steadily began to smile. He'd done it. Yet another foe had been defeated.
He turned to face his opponent's sponsor. "Well? Was that it?"
The man was scowling. Rolling his eyes, he tossed a bag of money at Shi Fei's feet. As the fighter picked up the bag, the man answered, "You may have beaten my champion this time, but no one's winning streak lasts forever. I'll be back again, and next time, you won't be so lucky!"
"Tch! Luck has nothing to do with it. I just won't let you take this place. I'll keep winning, even if I have to knock out every fighter you hire!" Shi Fei replied with a toothy smirk.
Frustrated, the man left his fighter behind and stormed off. Shi Fei watched him go. Then, he walked over to his defeated opponent, who was now sitting up, outside of the chalk circle that contained their fight.
"Hey," Shi Fei greeted. The man didn't reply, instead looking away bitterly. Shi Fei continued anyway. "How about you stay at the inn? It's not much, but it has a bed and a hot meal. I'll pay."
"What are you trying to do?" the defeated fighter snapped. "Are you spitting on what pride I have left?"
Shi Fei shook his head with that friendly smile plastered across his face. "I'm just trying to support this old town that your boss wants to buy...and you look like you could use a place to rest up at. This is my home, you know? I have a little pride in it."
The larger man glowered uncertainly at Shi Fei, then asked, "Have you ever fought professionally?"
Shi Fei frowned in mock offense. "Whaaat? You're talking like I don't! The name's Shi Fei! Haven't you heard of me?"
The man shook his head. "You're a troublesome small-town punk with no name and no title, but the spirit of a man aspiring for the top in underground fighting. You have the manners to match, too. Do you really just fight for your town?"
Shi Fei snorted in amusement. "No. I beat your butt, didn't I? I fight because I'm good at it!"
The man couldn't help but chuckle. Then, he sat in silence for a moment. His eyes wandered to Shi Fei's fists, and, motioning to them, he asked, "That move... What was that?"
"What was what?" Shi Fei asked, a bit of laughter in his voice. "I gave you a strong right uppercut to the gut -- that's all. If you're a professional, you should know that much!"
"Well, yeah, but..." the man stopped himself, then shook his head. "Guess I just imagined it. You know what? Let's go to that inn. You're still buying, though!"
"All right," Shi Fei laughed. Then, he helped the man up and set off for his small town's inn. Smiling to himself along the way, his thoughts turned to his opponent's question. I guess you saw it, then. My fighting spirit...

Today was glorious. Recently, he'd visited his old hometown, and the thugs had still not returned from the last time Shi Fei had chased them off, and only just the previous day, he had spent some time with his lovely Flora. Spending time with her always made him feel lighter on his feet and stronger in his stamina. Thinking about it now, on his way back home, he could hardly take it -- the energy was building up so quickly!

"HmmmmMMM YEAH! Today's going to be AWESOME!" Shi Fei yelled into the sky, thrusting both fists upward. Huh. That felt good. He finished the stretch as he walked, then cheerily brought his attention to the road before him again. He grinned to himself. I'm going to have to take Flora back to town sometime. I bet she'd love it there! Hmm- Oh. Huh? Who's that?

Further down the road, a young man was slowly walking along, hunched over. Actually, it looked like he had a bit of a limp. Hurrying over, Shi Fei asked him, "Hey, guy, are you okay?"

The young man ignored him, but Shi Fei only took that opportunity to get a closer look at him.

"Oh whoa, hey! You're bleeding! Come on, take a rest. I have some bandages-"

"Quiet."

Well, at least he could speak, it seemed, even though he grunted a little when he said that. Shi Fei kept pace. "Hm? What's wrong?"

It was clear that he wasn't about to get rid of the noisy tagalong he'd picked up. So, the young man lifted his head to send a glare at Shi Fei. Instead, his face blanked in surprise. What was up with those eyes?! That couldn't have been healthy... Were they even natural?

Remembering himself, the young man adjusted his intention and glared at the energetic one. "Go away."

Shi Fei gave the guy a glare of his own, but his was just annoyed. "Huh. I'm trying to help you out, you know? You look like you were stabbed."

"He was."

The young swordsman tensed up at the voice, while Shi Fei turned to look at who'd spoken up. It was another swordsman, but he didn't recognize him. "Hey, who're you?"

"It doesn't matter. Just know that I'm a swordsman who was hired..." he pointed to the bleeding man. "to kill that mercenary. You'd best get to a safe distance, or you might get caught between us."

Shi Fei gave a much more serious glare to this newcomer. "Hey, are you trying to threaten me?"

"No," the newcomer chuckled, "Just trying to warn you. It might not be clear, but a big fight's about to start. I thought you deserved a fair warning."

Shi Fei squinted at the man. "There's something about you I don't trust. Maybe it's how you talk. Why do you need to kill this guy anyway?"

"Heh. You ask too many questions," the elder swordsman stated.

"Hm. Sounds to me like you don't ask enough," Shi Fei replied, "You don't care if it's right or wrong -- you're just doing it for money. That's my guess."

"You're right. And I don't care if you get hurt along the way, since I already warned you." The man raised his sword and gave a sinister grin to Shi Fei. "Last chance, kid."

"You're right," Shi Fei replied before stepping between the younger swordsman and the older one and dropping into a fighting stance. "This is your last chance!"

"What're you doing?!" asked the younger swordsman, whirling around to face this lunatic and the swordsman who had followed him. He immediately flinched back down, gripping at his side as pain ripped through him from the sudden movement.

"Protecting you," Shi Fei answered, "You're in no condition to fight. And I bet you didn't even do anything wrong. So, I'm going to kick this guy's butt and get you to a doctor. Or the police, if you're really a criminal."

"Wha...? Are... Are you actually crazy?" he asked.

Shi Fei grinned broadly and laughed. "Hey! Maybe!"

What... What have I walked into? the younger swordsman wondered, a bit appalled at this random stranger's behavior.

The older swordsman then spoke. "Alright, then. If that's your choice, I'll just have to--"

"Talk or fight but make up your mind!" Shi Fei yelled as he charged the elder swordsman. The swordsman fell into a defensive stance, raising his sword as he did, but Shi Fei adjusted his course to move around the blade. He managed to deliver a powerful punch right into the swordsman's side, making the man flinch so heavily that he dropped to a knee and let go of his sword with one hand. Shi Fei turned in place and quickly followed up his strike with an axe kick aimed to strike right onto the swordsman's arced spine.

But the swordsman rolled forward, avoiding the attack, and turning as he landed, blade ready and facing Shi Fei once again. This time, he thrust forward, and the only reason he didn't gore Shi Fei was because the fighter sucked his belly in on time, and took a step back. Using the backward step to drive forward momentum, Shi Fei launched himself at his foe again, but this time, the swordsman pulled back a step. Shi Fei didn't have time to correct himself. He'd already thrown all of his momentum into the attack -- he couldn't pull back now, and he'd just opened himself wide to his foe. The swordsman thrust his blade forward, but suddenly, there was a second sword...sticking out of the elder swordsman's chest.

The elder swordsman gasped, and ceased his attack, trying to look behind him. Shi Fei was finally able to get his weight back over his feet.

"W-whoa! That's a bit much!" Shi Fei commented.

"Heh. So... Now what're you going to do?" asked the elder swordsman, "You have me pinned, here."

The younger swordsman quickly dislodged his sword from the other swordsman's body and with a single swipe, took off the man's head.

Shi Fei jumped back as the body fell forward and the head rolled to the side. "Whoa!" That was so cold! He quickly returned his attention to the younger swordsman, who was now kneeling. He looked fairly pale, and Shi Fei thought he saw him sweating. His breathing was ragged, too, and he could see now that the young man had lost a lot more blood than he'd first thought. I... I don't like it, but I get it. He gave the body one last look before hurrying to the young man's side. "Hey, are... Are you going to live?"

"M... Maybe." The young swordsman was shaking.

Shi Fei's eyes set in determination. "I'm getting you to a doctor."

That was all he said before picking the young man up bodily and adjusting him so that the swordsman was riding on his back. Then, he began running back to the city.

"Why...? I... I don't understand you at all. I'm a complete stranger... I just killed a man... Why are you trying so hard to help me?" asked the weak, young swordsman.

"I don't know. I guess I figure it's the right thing to do," Shi Fei answered, careful to pace out his speaking with his breathing.

"You don't know anything about me. Maybe I'm someone terrible, and that man I killed was trying to bring me to justice," the young swordsman suggested.

"I don't think so. I've seen men like him, and I have a feeling. I follow my gut," Shi Fei answered.

They were both quiet for a while. Then, Shi Fei said, "I do have one question, though."

The young man stiffened. Guradedly, he asked, "What is it?"

"What's your name?"

The young swordsman was a little surprised. He'd been expecting something like "why was that man chasing you?" or "how did you get your wound?" Thinking about it, though, such an innocent question made sense, from what little he knew of this strange fighter. He smiled, just a little. Then he answered, "My name is Rai."
