You were created to be a hero.

The words rang in the dragon's head for what seemed to be the five hundredth time that day.

"I'm trying," Hiro growled, climbing to her feet and brushing dirt off her neck. She sighed. It didn't help that her body was almost too heavy to get off the ground.

Hiro let out a sigh and stretched her wings, her morale returning bit by bit. "All right. We can do this." She ran forward, thick paws slamming against the ground, kicking up snow and dirt. She bunched her muscles and bounded into the air with a grunt, beating her red-and-yellow colored wings.

The Pearlcatcher laughed. She was doing it. She was really doing it! She was skimming across the ground, wind whistling through her crests, the air pushing up under her wings. There was no way--

"Oof!"

Hiro sat up, holding her sore head. She looked up at the thick old tree stump that had seemingly risen up out of the ground right in front of her. "Gotta learn to steer," she said. A triumphant smile returned to her face. "Really, though... that wasn't bad!"

"Do you always talk to yourself in this manner?"

Hiro whipped around, violet eyes wide and searching. They settled upon a Ridgeback wearing a cape and sitting on a low-hanging tree branch.

"Who are you...?"

"Me?"

The Ridgeback leaped off the branch, beating her wings. She settled on the ground in front of Hiro.

"My name is Neos. I've been watching you for some time now."

"Watching me?" Hiro echoed. Her chest puffed up in a defensive way. Her eyes were thinned.

"You're wary -- that's good," the Ridgeback mused, curling her tail around her feet. "I've been watching you because you amuse me. Why do you try so hard to fly?"

"Why wouldn't I?" Hiro grumbled. "I've got wings, haven't I?"

"So do chickens," Neos replied, sounding very amused. "You act as though you've got a drive behind this endeavor, though. ...Who told you that you could fly?"

"No one," the Pearlcatcher said, relaxing a little. "I mean... I told myself that I could. But I want to fly because.... Well, because I think it'd help me save people."

Neos looked surprised, though her voice did not reveal this emotion. "Why would you want to save people?"

"That's what I was made for," Hiro answered confidently, her jaw set in determination.
