Kyrie

Every dragon I meet tells me the tales of their travels. They all come from far away; they all undertook amazing journeys just to be here. Amazing coincidences, devastating losses, heroic victories. And always the leaving, and always the arriving. Let me tell you, for once, about staying.

I hatched here, in this lair, under the massive boughs of the Behemoth. Only once have I gone further than the river or the orchards. I am happy not to. Here, there is comfort, love and a warm hearth. I love my clanmates, and they love me.

My parents and sister have left, gone on one of those epic journeys. They're off to serve the Gladekeeper and I wish them well. So, the family lair is empty save for me now. I sweep it clean in the morning sun, clear the ashes, ready the firepit against the chill the evening will bring, check the food stores, gather what is needed.

When all is tidy, I may visit a neighbor, or play with the hatchlings. Or I may simply sun myself on one of the broad basking lounges. The bright heat of the midday sun is delightful to me. My parents once told me that we coatls enjoy such heat because we come from a land of fire so hot that the stone boils, and that one day I would want to go there. However, I do not. This is where I belong. I do not want endless tales of leaving and arriving. I only want the story of staying.
