Biography
Anemone
Goddess at the Roadside
Goddess at the Roadside
Named for the wildflowers that match her mane and wings, Anemone is regarded by her clanmates as nearly a goddess amongst dragons – not only for her great beauty, but for her gifts with medicine and magecraft as well. Often, she has pulled dragons back from the very gates of Death itself, healing grievous injuries and illnesses that might have stymied a lesser healer. Great though her abilities may be, Anemone is the very picture of modesty, brushing aside even the smallest praise. Indeed, she keeps to herself, and rarely interacts with her clanmates except for business… She keeps no mate, despite many eligible suitors, and to the knowledge of her clanmates, has no hatchlings. Few know the true story – that Anemone’s mate is the one dragon that she failed to save. Adonn, a fierce warrior from her birth clan, had courted her and won her heart. He rose to hunt one morning, as he often did, and it was dark before Anemone grew worried and flew out to seek him. By the time she found him, viciously gored by a great boar, he was beyond her powers – his wounds had already overcome him, and he lay dead beside the slain body of the beast. She has never forgiven herself for his death, never stopped wondering what might have happened if she had only sought him out sooner – and her sleep is haunted by thoughts of him dying, alone and far from her arms. That fear is what drives her – and the fear of losing another lover is what keeps her isolated, preferring solitude to the thought of having to face such pain again. |
Anemone has dedicated her life to her God – a cleric of great talent, she is as renowned for her miraculous abilities as she is for her great beauty and lovely voice. Indeed, she is as at home in the temple’s hospital ward or out in the streets helping those in need as she is leading prayers, and those in-the-know about temple politics consider her a favorite to lead the temple community when the current Prelate dies. Anemone has no such aspirations, however. She is content as a servant, helping others without the constraints of politics and governance, and assiduously avoids any sort of responsibility that might make her seem ‘more qualified’ in the eyes of the priesthood. Hence her current situation – a two-year sabbatical to travel the countryside, visiting other, more far-flung temples, and learning more about how other clerics work within the faith. What began as a simple tour has become something rather more exciting – when a monster attack separated her from her caravan, she was rescued by a band of traveling mercenaries, and after sending word to the temple, she chose to travel with them instead of returning to the caravan, reasoning that she could do the most good (and better avoid the eyes of her superiors) by assisting them in their heroics. Hopefully, a few years of reckless do-gooding will be enough to convince those watching that she's the wrong choice for Prelate... Hopefully. |
