He was a disgrace. That was what his father had said to him after they had failed in their coup to overthrow the leaders and were to be banished. Then again his father hadn’t been very happy with him before that when he hadn’t felt the pull to find a charge. His mother had been kinder about it, she’d said that his charge must not be born yet for him to feel no pull. So he had waited and waited and hadn’t felt a thing and his former clanmates had begun to whisper. He’d tried to ignore it but it hadn’t worked. Finally all his resentment had built up and he’d helped stage a coup only to fail. Now he was here in the Tangled Wood awaiting whatever the future brought.

The fire was just starting to die when he felt it. It had him tensing up as if he was suddenly more awake then he’d been in his life. Why hadn’t he realized he’d been half asleep for so long? He felt anticipation pool in low in his gut and yet there was something that whispered ‘not yet but soon.’ He froze as he realized what this feeling could be, had to be. He felt the eyes of the Guardians turn to him, knowing. He felt his head turn on its own in one specific direction and knew with all the surety of his heartbeat that his charge would soon be born.
