Fawkes is neither delicate nor subtle, well-known for his wild inventions and reckless disregard for safety. Despite the reputation, for years he's been the Directive's go-to engineer for outside projects and repairs. If you're on a tight budget and need to make something out of nothing, he's definitely your guy. The results are rarely pretty, sure, but by Stormcatcher they work. They probably won't even explode! He does in fact know to tone it down for the customers, and takes far more care with others than he does himself. When it comes to his personal health, though, it's a different story. When his experiments fail they fail spectacularly, and his poor mangled body is often caught in the backlash. Sparks skitter across his skin, at least what skin remains, and by now he's nearly more metal than flesh. A copper exoskeleton reinforces most of his body to make up for all the bits and pieces he's lost. To most outsiders he must seem Lightning incarnate, and it comes as a shock that beneath his goggles his eyes are forest green. His native Nature clan was one of the spectacularly isolated ones, where all but the most primal of magic was cast aside in favor of tradition. It chafed. When a rare merchant caravan passed through the territory, a teenaged Fawkes took the opportunity to learn all he could about the outside world. They were accompanied by something called a robot, a tiny skittering thing with no life force to speak of, and he was instantly in love. One furious screaming match with his parents later, he left Nature for good, took an apprenticeship in Lightning and never looked back.
