Biography
╭━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╮
". . ." ╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯ Cold cobblestones underfoot and narrow stone passageways are all that Icarus has known for a long time. She wanders the now familiar tunnels in the darkness, her way illuminated by the pale glow cast from an orb that she clutches tightly against her body. Her heavy wings stay folded against her sides, unused and atrophied after many years of living in the underground labyrinth. A Wind dragon who doesn’t fly? Unthinkable. At least she still has memories from a time when she soared high above the Windswept Plateau, her massive Guardian form casting shadows on the ground below. She was free back then. Free from the labyrinth confining her underground and the heavy metal bonds entangling her body. Most importantly, she was free from her Charge. “The Search is a wondrous thing!” Icarus’ parents preached when she was a young drake. They made Charges seem exciting, something that every Guardian would be proud to find. Icarus, too, was thrilled by the prospect of discovering her Charge. “It will give your life meaning,” the Guardians of her clan would say and Icarus was only too eager to leave the Windswept Plateau behind when the pull to Search finally began to kindle within her. Of course, the Search was not easy. The drive to find her Charge burned within Icarus and she felt something pulling her from place to place, only for the connection to fade the moment she arrived. “It must be moving” Icarus thought to herself, but she couldn’t figure out how anything could move so quickly. It was as if the Charge she searched for simply kept disappearing to somewhere beyond her grasp. Until one day. . . It was raining as Icarus soared above the forest-blanketed cliffs of the Beacon of the Radiant Eye. She could see the Beacon itself in the distance, a second sun whose light pierced through the stormy gray sky. She was getting close again and could feel the tug of her Charge beaconing her onwards. It pulled her down suddenly and the Guardian landed with a soft thump amidst the needle-laden floor of the dense redwood forest. Thick fog swirled around the trees and Icarus was nearly blind, relying solely on the ever-present pull from her Charge to guide her through the woods. It led her to a clearing where both the trees and fog seemed to part, almost un-naturally, out of the way. The Guardian looked up to find a clear sky twinkling with stars and the pale, ghostly light of the moon. She thought it had been morning when she landed and Icarus could only wonder how much time she had spent wandering the woods. Fireflies lifted from the grass around Icarus’ feet as the Guardian entered the clearing. The bond she felt with her Charge burned almost painfully within her and despite feeling closer than ever before, Icarus’ Charge was still nowhere to be seen. The Guardian hissed in frustration, her tail lashing as it struck and felled one of the trees that lined the perimeter of the clearing. She paid no mind to the tree as the splintered trunk snapped and it landed behind the Guardian with a thud on the soft grass. Icarus let out a sigh, her breath now visible in the air that had suddenly become frigidly cold. Even the grass now seemed crystalized beneath her, the blades frosted over with a thin layer of ice. Icarus froze when another drake appeared. It was an Imperial who stood before the Guardian as if she had materialized out of thin air, her form pale and translucent like moonlight. Icarus could not tear her eyes away from the ghostly drake and knew that she had finally found her Charge. The Imperial’s cold eyes flicked to the fallen tree and a look of annoyance settled over her features. “Guardian. Tell me. Why have you been following me?,” the pale dragon spoke coldly, her emotionless voice echoing through the clearing. It took Icarus a moment to reply, still shocked that she finally had her Charge within her grasp. “Yo-you’re my Charge,” she said hesitantly, still staring at the other drake in awe. Icarus looked at the pale Imperial in confusion when she began to laugh. “I don’t believe any of my kind has ever had a Guardian. A servant who doesn’t even need to be bound first how. . . intriguing.” Icarus forced a smile, but the dragon’s words sent a shiver down her spine. It was only a matter of time before the Guardian realized that the Imperial was not a dragon at all and the blessing of finding her Charge was much more akin to a curse. It was several years later that Icarus flew above the Ashfall Waste. She had to locate the clan quickly as she knew Titania would find her soon. She had heard about Clan Blaze and the powerful mage who resided there from a traveler who had recently arrived at the Cathedral of Eyes with a myriad of tales about the the places she had visited. Icarus finally spotted the gates to Clan Blaze rising up from the smoldering ground of the Blacksand Annex. As Kino had described, it was a busy clan with dragons bustling about as they worked the forges or mixed experimental concoctions that were more than likely to explode. There was another Guardian waiting for Icarus at the gates who seemed to be expecting the younger drake. “Quickly,” she spoke with sadness in her voice, “I will take you to our mage. . .” She was called Ilumetra, another Guardian draped in elegant silks and shimmering silver jewelry. “Ah, yes. You must be the one who Starfall foretold coming. . . you want me to change your form. But why?,” the mage questioned. Icarus cast her eyes towards the ground as she spoke, “I no longer wish to be bound to my Charge. . .” Illumetra looked over the younger Guardian, noticing the scars that marred her hide and didn’t ask any more questions. “I can change your form, but the bond between a Guardian and their Charge is difficult to sever completely. I will do my best to redirect it, but there is no guarantee that it will disappear.” And so, Icarus became a Pearlcatcher, her bond to the fairy queen captured in a shimmering orb that she now carried as a pearl. She thanked the mage and left Clan Blaze as quickly as she could least Titania find her there. She had nearly made it out of the Blacksand Annex when she felt the smoldering air around her suddenly chill. “Icarus.” The voice came from behind and the newly formed Pearlcatcher felt the blood in her veins turn to ice as the fairy queen appeared. Icarus didn’t need to turn to feel the rage that emanated from the queen. She felt Titania attempt to pull at their bond, to force Icarus into submission as she had so many times before, but the bond was so weak now that the Pearlcatcher could defy it. She leapt into the air, frantically beating her wings in an attempt to escape. She heard Titania’s furious snarl behind her and knew that the pale Imperial had taken to the sky in pursuit. Icarus was uncoordinated in her new form and she was so much smaller now that Titania had little trouble catching up. Icarus felt one of the Imperial’s massive wings collide with her own and force her towards the Earth. She let out a pained scream as the molten ground of the Ashfall Waste burned through her scales and scalded the skin beneath. The ice-cold talons that wrapped around her neck were almost comforting and the Pearlcatcher stilled in the fairy queen’s grasp. “You dare defy me? I don’t need you to be a Guardian to bind you into servitude. . . and we’ll be sure that you don’t attempt to flee again. In fact, since you seem to love flying away so much, perhaps it’s best if we. . . removed the temptation”. Icarus struggled as she felt something begin to wrap around her, restricting her movement. She felt heavy as if she were being encased in twisted metal and stone. The Pearlcatcher whimpered as Titania finally released her hold from the Icarus’ neck. “We’re going home”, she said as the Ashfall Waste flickered around them and soon disappeared. Icarus tried weakly to stretch her wings, but they were too heavy and simply remained folded against her sides. She was cast away by Titania who put her in charge of guarding the underground labyrinth where the faeries dumped victims they wished to dispose of. She tried befriending some of them, but most perished, devoured by the vampiric creatures who inhabited the maze-like tunnels. Icarus assumed that they too were cursed beings that the faeries had trapped here. Then, she met Minotaur, a Skydancer whose glowing runic markings repelled the beasts of the labyrinth. He too was a victim of the faeries and the pair grew close over time. It was not until many years later that a pale Wildclaw arrived at the Cathedral. Icarus heard the rumors, that Titania and Oberon’s son had found his way back to the faeries - a new prince for their Court. A different rumor reached her ears as well, that the newcomer had his sights set of overthrowing the Court of Faerie. It was the opportunity that Icarus had waited decades for and she was quick to ally herself with the prince. After that, everything went according to plan. It was the bond within Icarus’ pearl along with a strange spell that pulled the faerie queen and king into their prison. The pearl itself is now cold to the touch, still radiating with the power of the fairies that it contains. As for Icarus, the Pearlcatcher still guards her Charge. The curses that bind her remain, but she is happy enough. Minotaur left the Cathedral soon after the fall of the Faerie Court, but he still sends messages to Icarus from time to time. The Pearlcatcher finally makes it to the end of the labyrinth, where the roots of an ancient tree have eroded the maze and left it open to the air above. Sunlight streams in from the opening and a small teal-colored bird chirps in excitement when he sees her. The parrot carries a message from Minotaur and the Pearlcatcher smiles as she unties the roll of parchment from the bird’s leg and sits down in the sunlight to read it.
