Blackthorn
The Pick-pocket
Arrived in the Clarus Clan on November 30, 2016
Growing up in the City of Radiance was a dream. Blackthorn - back then, nicknamed Rumble - always had something brewing beneath his summer fur. There was never a dull moment for the young Tundra, especially with his parents being who they are. Blackthorn often followed his father, Lilac, to work - against his mother's wishes, even though Darya was too busy with her own work to keep a careful eye on the young one. Sometimes he even trailed after Darya to the Black Rock Hatchery, the black market nursery she operated with his auntie Deja. It seemed a lot quieter than the tavern, and the dragons chained to the room were quiet, forlorn. It confused Blackthorn, so he decided to return to the tavern instead of staying in his mother’s shadows. It was in this environment of dim-lit rooms filled with shady dragons and shady dealings which shaped Blackthorn throughout his hatchlinghood. He was immediately swept up in the dazzle of this underground society. Because it was easier for the Clan to keep an eye on Blackthorn at night, when his parents were in the lair, Blackthorn rarely made it to the tavern his father owned in the Lavaburst lair. Instead, Blackthorn often found his way to the trading post, following in his father’s footsteps, to the tavern located there. |
At first Blackthorn made his way on his own, but once his plans were discovered Lilac would laugh and lift the hatchling onto his shoulders, carrying him the rest of the way. It was in this way which Blackthorn met Kitten, a Fae thief. She was a regular at his father’s tavern, and he was enraptured by her stories, her lively nature. He was so young, that they were the same size, and would share a barstool. She would talk, he would munch on a bowl of fruits, and his father would keep an eye on them both. “Now don’t go teaching my boy all about how to break the law,” Lilac would say, half-joking - but half-serious, too. |
Of course, that’s exactly what she did. Blackthorn quickly picked up on all the tricks of the trade, under Kitten’s careful observance. She was a wild teacher, never following a consistent teaching pattern. It was all part of the lesson, she assured him. The more spontaneous you were, the more successful you would be. “Predictability is a death sentence,” she would repeat constantly. When Lilac caught on to Blackthorn’s lessons, he merely shook his head and sighed. “Do what you will, son, but I will give you the same warning as I have given Kitten. Do not ever make the Clan merchants, or the Clan itself, your victim.” Lilac made Blackthorn promise, although Blackthorn had never considered stealing from his own Clan, his loved ones. One day, Darya caught on to her son’s activities. “And to think, I’ve never brought you to my work!” she cried out, disappointed not in her son but in herself. “Do you think that is appropriate?” Lilac raised an eyebrow, slightly concerned for his son. “Well, of course not!” Darya snapped in exasperation. “But let us ask the boy what he wants.” Blackthorn didn’t admit he had already been to the Black Rock hatchery, even if only for a brief moment. Instead, he jumped to his feet. “I’d love to go with you, mother!” he said, snapping his jaw in delight. His incisors glinted in the light. “Then off we go!” Darya laughed, delighted, while Lilac sat back with a furrowed brow. The very next morning, Darya took Blackthorn while Lilac was still asleep. She explained the mission of her hatchery, and warned Blackthorn not to attempt to free any of the dragons she kept. “But you can play with them while me and Deja get to work for the day!” |

For the next few days, Blackthorn got to know the dragons at Black Rock. He was bewildered by Divinity and so avoided her; he was entranced by Lollipop and liked to draw pictures for her, although he was too shy to hand them over; slowly, he grew to love curling up by Nightlight and listening to the older dragon tell stories. Blackthorn was torn between following Lilac to work and hanging out with Kitten, or tagging along with his mother to visit the hatchery and the dragons living there. He wound up switching between the two, more happy among thieves and prisoners than any hatchling ought to be. Sometimes he would practice his thieving skills on passerbys at the tavern and then bring the trinkets to the dragons chained at the hatchery. Before long, Blackthorn was grown. It was this time when the Clan leader approached his parents with a notion of sending the young Tundra to an allied Clan in the Viridian Labyrinth. At first, Blackthorn was devastated. Would he be divorced from his friends forever? But his parents reassured him - “You can return to the tavern and hatchery whenever you’d like,” they promised. It did not take long for the Tundra to grow excited to join his future Clan. When he came to the Clarus Clan, he instantly fell in love with the Willow and the Stream, the tavern run by the Imperial Molson. Nowadays, one can almost always find Blackthorn in or around the tavern, sometimes even napping under a table on the second-floor balcony. He has not yet stolen anything from the Clarus Clan - the merchant and hoard-keeper, mates Tucker and DarkWater, would not let him near their wares - but Blackthorn enjoys taking strolls along nearby paths, charming travelers and pick-pocketing whatever he can get his paws on. |
